When were the first human #coronaviruses (CoVs) discovered and studied?

How were these viruses associated with human #disease?

It's time to learn our history about human CoVs, and the scientists and volunteers that allowed us to identify this new group of viruses.

A THREAD.
Mid-sixties: HCoV-229E and HCoV-OC43 were identified.

2. McIntosh et al. (1967)
3. Tyrrell et al. (1965).

Healthy HUMAN volunteers were infected to demonstrate that 229E and OC43 resulted in a common cold.

New preprint out. We investigated whether we could detect evidence for genetic recombination in #SARSCoV2, and found none to date. We used (slightly tweaked) standard statistical genetics methods, extensive simulations and a validation in #MERSCoV.

Recombination in #SARSCoV2 has been largely overlooked to date. Recombination-mediated rearrangement of variants that arose independently can be of major evolutionary importance. The absence of recombination is also a key assumption behind any phylogenetic inference.
2/
It is often assumed that coronaviruses recombine readily between and within 'species lineages'. We previously found no evidence for recombination between different coronaviruses. #SARSCoV2 in particular doesn't look like a recombinant.

MUST WATCH: @AJInsideStory
#RussianCoronaVirusVaccine
Very interesting and informative! Moscow Participant explains need for registration for Phase III trial and large & scale manufacturing & said the vaccine is not supposed to be offered till 2021!!
Apparently the Russians have been working on the #MERSCoV vaccine and used the same platform for #COVID19 - sounds reasonable to me?!
So, much Western envy about nothing?! #RussianVaccine

Impressive work by Pérez and Montagnier. Insertions of HIV in both #SARSCoV2 and #RaTG13CoV , absent in #SARSCoV and #MERSCoV Also probabilistic signs of synthetic RNA sequences. How explain this?
And in this paper by Zheng-Li Shi, an experiment with pseudoHIV viruses was made.

If anyone wants to investigate for themselves, here are all of the similar sequences to #SARSCoV2, #SARSCoV1, and #DISEASEXXX, a dog coronavirus. Note that #MERSCoV is ~64% similar to SARS-COV-2 and SARS-CoV2 is 80% similar to SARS-CoV-1.

These were download from @NIH #GenBank.

A #thread on the origin of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome #coronavirus-2 #SARSCoV2, the #virus causing #COVID19. SARS-CoV-2 was identified early January 2020; genetic sequence shared publicly on 11 January. #scicomm [image 감사합니다 @IBS_media] @Virologist_11 @dirgarambe
Full genetic sequence of #SARSCoV2 from early human cases & sequences of other virus isolated from human cases from China & all over the world since then show that SARS-CoV-2 has an ecological origin in #bats.
All available evidence to date suggests that #SARSCoV2 #coronavirus has a natural animal origin and is not a manipulated or constructed virus. nature.com/articles/s4159…

There is an urgent need to generate effective vaccine against #SARSCoV2. This is such an important topic, and many agencies/labs/companies are working on it. I want to open up this discussion here. Let's unite towards this goal.

Pls RT, chime in with your insights/thoughts.

1/n
Learning from previous #CoV studies, what is likely to be the correlate of protection? What vaccine approaches generate best neutralizing antibody (Ab)? How quickly does #CoV generally mutate away from Ab-mediated recognition?

2/n
What would be a good preclinical model to test vaccine efficacy against #CoV? How well do antibodies to previous #CoVs cross-react against other members including #SARSCoV1, #MERSCoV and #SARSCoV2?
