Our #systematicreview and #metaanalysis on the association of #sepsis with long-term #CVD is out now in @yourICM ! Surviving sepsis was associated with ⬆️#cvMI, #heartfailure, and #stroke over 5+ years. Take-home points below. tinyurl.com/p5n634jy
1. Many studies have examined the risk of #CVD after #sepsis, but variable population and outcome selection has complicated generalizability. We estimated the risk of #cvMI, #heartfailure, #stroke, and composite #CVD after sepsis relative to hospital and population controls.
2. 12,649 citations identified, 27 (25 cohort, 2 case-crossover) studies included. Median of 4,289 (IQR 502–68,125) sepsis survivors and 18,399 (IQR 4,028–83,506) controls per study. We assessed cumulative incidence and relative risk of #CVD from 30 days to longest follow-up.

Bashing #metaanalysis is as fashionable as ever, as always with hands up in the air. In response to a thread moaning the lack of added value of meta-analyses over individual studies, I realized I know of *many* meta-analyses that literally overturned whole fields.
So I want to start my alternative thread, in which instead the of the same old lamets, we list consequential meta-analyses in #Mentalhealth, which definitely provided more information than each and any single individual study.
These don't have to be methodologically flawless, because no study is. They do have to have a decent quality (which is much less of an elusive construct than oft presented). I will start with a few and update when I have time. Feel free to add to the collection. Order random.

Paper alert: @heimbergecon +I investigate: Do corporate tax cuts boost economic growth? There is a growing empirical literature. As often, studies come to ambiguous conclusions: corporate tax cuts increase, reduce, or do not signif. affect growth. Thread: boeckler.de/de/faust-detai…
This is a classic partisan fiscal policy debate. One camp claims that tax cuts improve profit margins which will spur investment and thus growth+jobs. The other doubts that higher profits will lead to more investment and claims that the tax revenues could be used more effectively
Former Pres. #Trump promoted the #TCJA, which entailed a large corporate tax cut, insisting on huge growth effects. The #Biden admin. now argues for reversal: funds should better be used for public investment instead. @WhiteHouseCEA

Hurray! Together with great coauthors @DomiEhrenberger, Tomas + Zuzana we finally got it published: Our #metaanalysis on the elasticity of substitution b/w capital and labor, a.k.a. the “Death to the Cobb-Douglas production function” made it to the @RevEconDyn. Thread:
First of all, here’s a 50days free access share link authors.elsevier.com/a/1d7Oo3uolWav… (which seems to work with Chrome though not with Firefox). Please feel free to share it in your networks.
The elasticity (σ) is a central parameter in macroeconomics. It determines how easy (high σ), difficult (low σ) it is to substitute capital (C) and labor (L) inputs in production. At the extreme ends, σ=0 -> no substitutability (Leontief) -> C/L always enter in fixed proportions.

v10 of our #LivingReview is live on @qeios

We have reviewed 345 studies. 52 of sufficient quality for #MetaAnalysis to explore the association of #Smoking and #COVID19 #infection, #hospitalisation, #severity and #mortality.

qeios.com/read/UJR2AW.11
No dramatic changes from v9 posted in November.

Most studies from 🇺🇸, 🇨🇳 & 🇬🇧 but from 39 countries. 65% hospital based, 8% purely community. Median of 461 individuals per study.

Smoking remains poorly recorded, only 29% of studies categorise as current 🚬, former and never 🚭
6 studies report on alternative nicotine products.

Large amounts of missing data in many studies on 🚬 status introducing bias.

Huge reliance on #ElectronicHealthRecords and all the limitations that brings. See our recent #PrePrint if interested (doi.org/10.1101/2020.1…)

The idea started with a dialogue by a colleague ”We don’t do lasers, they are ancient, we do avastin - simple, easy, less recurrence.”

Me: “there are long term risks - right?”

Colleague: Na, it’s ok, we already accepted & moved 🤨

I thought it’s good idea to pursue a #Systematicreview as the evidence is sketchy & controversial but what really pushed me to do the review is👇

A recent study in @nature couldn't replicate drastic CO2 effects on coral reef #fish behaviour & empirically found no effect of #oceanacidification go.nature.com/3hK49UR

Our #metaanalysis of the past decade on this topic concurs ecoevorxiv.org/k9dby/

Breakdown thread👇
We demonstrate one of the most striking examples of the #DeclineEffect in #ecology to date, w/ reported effects of OA on fish behaviour all but disappearing over past decade

If you’ve never heard of the #DeclineEffect see: bit.ly/2EbZX2o
Qualitatively the number of studies reporting “strong” effects of #oceanacidification on fish behaviour have plummeted over time

My tips for conducting a #SystematicReview - a thread.

1. Have a look whether any systematic review or #metaanalysis has been conducted on your topic before. If so, what (gaps) did they uncover? How did they structure their results? How will your review differ?

#phdchat
2. Have a look at the resources available at @PRISMAStatement, including the checklist and flow diagram (prisma-statement.org/PRISMAStatemen…), and use it to guide your processes.
3. Get in touch with the reference #librarian at your institution, or check out the resources available through any #HigherEducation #library website. They'll have valuable insight into search string development and database best practice.

My new & very likely most important paper of 2020 @TheLancetPsych #network #metaanalysis on the efficacy of cognitive bias modification for #anxiety or #depression in clinical or subclinical patients

People who follow this field know I have been one of its first and unrelenting critics, starting with my meta-analysis in 2015 @TheBJPsych (again w/ @pimcuijpers) cambridge.org/core/journals/…, followed by others, including many viewpoints, comments & replies that I will spare you.
I was one of the first researchers to have explicitly state that maybe #CBM just does not work and there are no moderators or boundary conditions that can save it. But time passed, studies went on, the field continued to grow & adapt, and so maybe it was time for a reassessment.

Proud that my first paper as first author just got published in @ejpblog! It’s called “Resting Frontal EEG Asymmetry and Personality Traits: A Meta-analysis”. I worked on it with @w_kaeckenmester and Jan Wacker. I’ll explain what we found below! 1/12

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.100…
Frontal asymmetry describes the difference in brain activity between the left & right frontal cortex and is often measured in the resting state via EEG. It has been used in hundreds of studies as an indicator of motivation, emotion, and psychopathology. 2/12
Research has linked resting frontal asymmetry to personality traits, especially trait approach & withdrawal motivation (BAS & BIS). However, there have been replication issues & it was unclear whether these effects exist & what their magnitude is – so we did a #metaanalysis! 3/12
