Phages can be broadly classified into two groups: temperate and virulent (or lyosogenic and lytic if you prefer). Temperate phages are by far the most interesting of the two! (Sorry phage therapists). This is because:
temperate phages can integrate their genomes into the DNA of bacterial hosts and manipulate their biology with new genes (=accessory/moron genes). For example, so many professional bacterial pathogens rely upon prophage-encoded toxins and virulence factors.
