THREAD: It took Miami resident @Rotulin 27 hours and 13 (!!!) city employees to pay a $75 fine. His Instagram story exposes this "absurd" system and, he says, shows "how full of shit @CityofMiami is." #BecauseMiami #CafecitoTalk #TechHub #HowCanIHelp /1 instagram.com/stories/highli…
According to the @CityofMiami website, in order to pay this $75 fine, the resident must "request a customer number" by emailing or calling the city, which he (accurately) describes as "a painfully ineffective system." #BecauseMiami /2
His email is received by @CityofMiami Finance Department Customer Service Supervisor who forwards it to a Customer Service Rep who, the next day, emails THREE additional city workers to "assist in verifying the ticket so the customer can be provided an invoice." #BecauseMiami /3

1/ Today, @cityofmiami was certified by @WhatWorksCities for its use of data & evidence to drive decision-making. I treasure this achievement. Data-informed work has been a priority goal since I started as Chief Innovation Officer 5+ years ago. Here's (long) 🧵 about our journey:
2/ First note: Scaling data in cities is a grind. You don't just ideate your way into a thriving data practice. It's tedious AF - a trail of mostly barely perceivable wins over long periods of time w/occasional ah-ha bursts of impact & a celebratory hackathon here & there.
3/ But eventually, the flywheel starts to happen. After endless hours of data clean-up, process mapping, advocacy among peers (rinse / repeat), more and more colleagues start to see the power to transform day-today work, then programs, eventually systems.

Is Miamitech a fad? Here are the top 10 reasons why #MiamiTech is HERE TO STAY.

Quick note: I will make this into a tweet series because Miami has so many different things to offer that makes it an amazing place to live and work in.
Here are the reasons why Miamitech is in it for the long term:

1. Miami is a great city. It doesn’t matter if you’re single or in your twenties, or if you’re a PhD with a family of four, it’s an amazing place to live.
Just the outdoors, the weather, the hospitality, the beaches, the proximity to the Caribbean, to Europe… There's a huge number of reasons why living in Southern FL is a WIN.

I was asked by a newcomer to be more welcoming to the incoming tech community. So here’s my version of a welcome mat to Miami: a thread for #miamitech
1. We can’t welcome you if you don’t know where you are where. My “Miami reading list” is a thread for another day but start here: A World More Concrete by N.D.B. Connolly. Not only the best book about Miami but maybe the best book about a city, period.
2. Ok I lied. One more book. The Halfway House by Guillermo Rosales. Because you can tell the truth in fiction too.
