Slightly earlier than expected, the weekly row over the Dáil schedule - some grievance about how little time is available to debate possible amendments to the defective blocks (#micaredress) legislation - is it to avoid scrutiny, or necessary to get it passed before the recess?
Should be noted that many of the TDs who routinely demand Dáil time for ‘statements on X’ are also now complaining that there is too little time for legislating - though should also be noted that some bills (e.g. mica) are being published by various Govt departments late in term
Dáil schedule approved 66-60 - which is in itself an acid test of government support in the house, given the curtailed timetable for mica bill is a source of real grievance. Given unity of opposition, and financial stakes of bill, SF calling a repeat of the vote by walk-through

MORE confusion today about #micaredress caps... An explainer:

Govt have proposed 2 caps

1️⃣ A 420K absolute cap
2️⃣ A sq/ft based cap (this has a sliding scale I'll explain later)

Nearly all homes will need to work on the sq/ft cap, which will result in WAY less than 420k

1/
The sq/ft cap is supposedly based on independent SCSI expert figures.

In March 21, SCSI said average cost to REBUILD a house in NW was 138 per sw/ft

So a 2000 sw/ft house would have a grant of 2000 * 138 = 276k in this simple example.

2/
HOWEVER, Govt have proposed a sliding scale for the sq/ft cap where:

145 per sq/ft for first 1000 sq/ft
110 per sq/ft for next 1000 sq/ft
100 per sq/ft for remainder

So in this instance it would be
(1000 * 145) + (1000 * 110) = 255k

The Mica scandal is so big and so difficult to fully understand, particularly for people only now becoming aware of the issue. There is therefore still some confusion about why we NEED government support. A thread 1/
First misconception- builders should cover the cost. Reality is, this is NOT the fault of the builders. They built the houses assuming that the blocks met that standards set out in S.I. No. 288/1949 because the manufacturers certified the blocks saying they met standards 2/
Second Misconception- this is up to the block manufacturer to sort out. Yes this should actually be true. However, in reality, it has been impossible to sanction the manufacturer thus far and nobody has successfully gained recourse from them using legal routes 3/

**note it doesn't cost anything to register**
I spoke with someone from the council the other day and they asked me to stress the importance of families registering with the defective blocks scheme on the Dgl Co. Council website if you are a family affected by mica who own their
own home. They said currently the numbers are low (in the hundreds) and this is something they get asked and does not help their case when they meet with the Minister on the issue.
So, if you have not already done so and you plan to apply for the scheme sometime in the future

Dear People of Inishowen and beyond, please take time to read this and pass it on to everyone you know.

The Mica problem in Inishowen is greatly affecting our families and especially our children!
Anxiety and stress levels are very high among young and old. Everyone’s mental health and well-being are affected and this cannot go on. It is the main conversation among children in our primary schools. It is all that parents talk about at the school gates, at home and at work.
Children are asking their parents if their house is safe to live in. Our children should not have these worries. It is getting out of control and our government isn’t listening.
