.@MacEmerg Virtual Regional Rounds: #DEI in #MedEd: Being an #upstander!

đź’Why does #DEI matter? Many benefits, here are just a few:
🗺️Improved cultural competence
🏥Expanded delivery of health care to low resource settings
🗨️Improved intellectual discussion in MedEd Image

đź’The issue is that Racism exists on all levels. And because its so embedded in our societies, it's hard to recognize and even harder to change. Image

I remember saying in a talk once:

“Bad intentions aren’t a prerequisite for something to be considered a #microaggression.”

Funny how our own words and lessons can come back to tap us on the shoulder.

Let me explain.

All of our luggage was clustered near the front porch. It was about five minutes to the hour that we had to be fully vacated from the house that we’d rented for spring break.

Everyone was scrambling about and making sure we had everything after a lazy week of relaxing.

Yup.

The hatch was up on the back of my car and my teen son was loading in bags with me.

That’s when I noticed a gentleman walking toward me from what appeared to be a truck filled with cleaning items. I could see that he was accompanied by some others gathering what they’d need.

Few years ago, I was offered a scoop of an ice cream named “#ColonialStreet” at @NLChocolateCo

Which #bipoc wants to PAY for a taste of THAT when they can have it for free?

Same ppl who said to me then “what’s the big deal?” now supporting removal of racist elements

I see you
After learning that their ice creams are named after streets in #newfoundland , I filled out a survey asking @NLChocolateCo, “Why would you want to commemorate #colonialism by naming an ice cream flavour after it?”

I never heard back
For those asking why it was “such a big deal to me”

It was one of the many reminders that I didn’t “belong” in the city of #StJohns, #newfoundland & in #Canada. In that moment, I wished to go back to my homeland, India.

I've been having the heartbreaking conversation with so many Black people who are dreading tomorrow and the Zoom calls or the ”How are you?” -

Your Black leaders and employees are not OK.

It's triggering to ask ”How are you”
I hope CEO’s & Executive Sponsors for Black ERG’s and other ERG’s

Head of Diversity and Inclusion have reached out and connected with your Black ERG leaders and your Black employees.

At the very least ensure all mandatory meetings have a ”No Video Requirement” please
The #Emotionaltax Black employees are going through right now is through the roof.

Many I've spoken to are feeling rage, fear, anger, resignation, exhaustion, defeat and more.

Be uncomfortable, put #Blacklives BEFORE your feelings @RachelCargle

It's the HUMAN thing to do.

While I’m on the subject of strangers being weird. Here’s a #thread on a #homophobic #microaggression I experienced, also from this @HiltonHotels hotel I’m in. It includes some thoughts on behavior for #customerservice folks.
So I am in Houston where one of my partners lives. My partner is a white non-binary femme & we had spent the day together before I checked into the hotel yesterday. The person checking us in said “Are you two together?” and I said yes.
The front desk person began checking me in and then said “Do you want a double suite?” I didn’t understand & asked them to repeat. The person said “You’re registered for a king bed, do you want a double suite instead? With two beds?”

Y'all can I discuss a #microaggression that occurred last week at an #AWP19 after-party? Because, as I told my co-workers this morning, it is indicative of a continual issue in forward momentum in the industry and in the country.
I also want to note that I was not the only person to witness this event. Another women of color and a friend who identifies as nonbinary and is queer (white) were also right there to witness this.
For those who saw me on Thursday I was wearing the #AccessIsLove t-shirt that @SFdirewolf discussed online. I would highly suggest folks buy one as it's super comfy and really great quality: teespring.com/stores/access-…
