🚨Another study finds #microclots in #LongCovid

“We would argue that whilst there may be many mechanisms at play in the pathogenesis of Long Covid, the common pathological process is thrombotic endotheliitis.”medrxiv.org/content/10.110…
“We conclude that presence of microclotting, together with relatively high levels of six inflammatory molecules known to be key drivers of endothelial and clotting pathology, points to thrombotic endotheliitis as a key pathological process in #LongCovid.”
“This may be characterized by the formation of anomalous fibrinaloid microclots, hyperactivated platelets, endotheliitis and elevated levels of prothrombotic inflammatory molecules which interact with each other as well as with platelets and the endothelium”

🚨#MicroClots research in #LongCovid has now been replicated in UK. Similar findings also in Germany & Ireland:

"Caroline Dalton, a neuroscientist at Sheffield Hallam University, UK, has replicated the results.. In Long COVID #MicroClots seem to persist."
nature.com/articles/d4158…
"Dalton has also found that fatigue scores seem to correlate with #MicroClot counts..That, says Dalton, 'increases confidence that we are measuring something that is mechanistically linked to the condition'. #LongCovid
"Danny Jonigk, a pathologist at Hanover Medical School in Germany looked at tissue samples from people who died of COVID. They found #MicroClots & saw that the capillaries had split, forming new branches to try to keep oxygen-rich blood flowing." #LongCovid

1/ 7 reasons to be optimistic about #longcovid in 2022: accessible #microclot testing, controlled trials of anticoagulants, published research on HELP Apheresis, BC007 trial results, availability of paxlovid (and monoclonals?), >$1Bn of research starting to publish results...
2/ and the increasing rate of progress in research. Four months ago we weren't talking about clots, Apheresis, or BC007. The rate of progress is accelerating, and it seems likely more breakthroughs will be made.
