There are positive effects of the #ketone body beta hydroxy-butyrate (BHB) on vascular function. Why? Very likely, the following things that we already know BHB does. And quite frankly, there are likely additional mechanisms that haven't even been discovered yet. šŸ§µ(1/10)
BHB lowers high blood sugar, and that reduces the production of reactive oxygen species #ROS and #inflammation mediators. In other words, BHB reduces Oxidative Stress (2/10)
BHB increases endogenous #antioxidant production by upregulating gene expression in those pathways. So yes, #BHB reduces Oxidative Stress from that mechanism as well. (3/10)

Are #fruits essential?
Sugar Bombs: I believed in & practiced "An Apple a day" idiom for couple decades. However stopped few years back. Most med sized fruits like banana, apple, orange, pear that we consume provide 22-25 gms of #Fructose, that is 5 teaspoons of Sugar. Huge!

Fruits're similar to alcohol: Fructose is metabolized in liver (not small intestine). It doesn't provide any energy to the body/brain, so Liver has to convert & store the same as Fat : similar to alcohol. Fructose leads to fatty liver syndrome otherwise caused by alcohol

Fruits have changed over years: They've been made lot more sweeter & altered its structure (smaller or no seeds, more sugary pulp). Also too many chemicals used from seed to market including very long shipping & storage. By the time it reaches your plate, it's no more fresh!

Thread on #Magnesium and why it is fundamental for our #health. #micronutrients
..many people debate the various ratios of #macronutrients like #protein, #fat, and #carbohydrates in their diet to find their optimal health. Which is great as we are #bioindividuals but most miss out on #micronutrients like #vitamins and #minerals.
The way our bodies are able to use the #macronutrients is fully dependent on how our #enzymatic pathways are influenced by various #micronutrients. One of the most important amongst is #magnesium.

šŸšØNew in @PNASNews! We demonstrate that aquatic #biodiversity directly benefits humanity via nutritional benefits of #seafood.
Iā€™m thrilled to share this: it's a BIG one for me, itā€™s the product of > 7 years (!) of developing ideas & collecting data.

@mioconnor and I bridge the gap between #biodiversity science and human nutrition science & demonstrate mechanistic links between aquatic #biodiversity and human nutritional well-being in the context of #AquaticFoods. Photo of seafood at at market in Papua New Guinea, courtesy
We answer one of the most pressing questions in ecology:

Does biodiversity per se (species richness and ecological functional diversity), distinct from the identities and abundance of species enhance human well-being?
