Visited @LincolnBirthNPS small but informative! Expanded my knowledge of #Lincoln from his @LincolnBoyhood to his #loncolnsbirthplace. #nationalparks #travelblogger #kentucy #MidWest
Stopped by @visitbardstown and @JimBeam I didn’t have a good experience at #JimBeam. In line to check out two bottles #burbonwhisky on the 2nd floor but the cashier just ignored us as he was talking to another group of customers endlessly. We had to go downstairs🌚

Glad to be spending a few days in Kansas and Missouri to broaden 🇫🇷🇺🇸 partnership in the Midwest. Here are just a few highlights ⤵️
Go Jayhawks! I had the pleasure of meeting with the French Dept at the @UnivOfKansas–the newest #Midwest member of the Embassy's Centers of Excellence network. A delightful morning with talented faculty who work with bright students on a beautiful campus.
@UnivOfKansas @franceintheus @francediplo_EN @francediplo @KU_FFIT @KUStudyAbroad @LtGovToland @GovLauraKelly @KUCollege @kufrenchclub The National WWI Museum and Memorial (@TheWWImuseum) in Kansas City is a moving testament to our shared history in the Great War. It is built on a century of cooperation and holds an extensive collection. Thank you Matthew Naylor for taking me around.

Just surveyed ~400 pro remodelers. Top 4 themes: 1) Big remodels all the rage; 2) Many remodelers are booked until 2022+; 3) Product lead times & labor shortages still bad (see chart); 4) Homeowners fixing & staying put, not selling. Commentary from across country to follow…
#Texas remodeler: “I can’t grow with 20 week lead times on basic products. I started asking my suppliers what products are easiest to install. I don’t have enough labor to spend more time installing a touchless faucet than absolutely necessary.”
#Texas design-build firm: “My clients are essentially flipping their homes, but they aren’t selling. They want something fresh & new.”

Consequences of surging hospital admissions across the #midwest

1) Busy rural ER docs calling 6,7,8 hospitals to try to find a bed for a sick patient in need of tertiary care. And failing.

2) Repurposing existing beds to accommodate #COVID19 patients. 1/8
3) Rescheduling ever more urgent surgeries--heart surgery, cancer surgery, spine surgery--to some future date...a "less busy" date that is hard to see right now.

4) Staffing these new #COVID units, in some cases with non-ICU practitioners. 2/8
5) Competing for travel nurses to try to meet increased staffing needs. Many hospitals are short-staffed at baseline. Without an ICU team, an ICU bed is just a bed. 3/8

Still tracking #coronavirus. Here's the #Midwest as of this morning on the New York Times' #COVID19 tracking site, sorted by infection rate. For comparison, on the right you'll see the Midwest 7 and 14 days ago. ImageImageImage
Again, this morning (left) but with 21 days ago (right). Oh, how #Wisconsin has fallen. By which I mean risen. Gone up. Got worse. Whatever. You know what I mean. ImageImage
21 days ago would be right after the WI Supreme Court ruling ending "Safer at Home." In that time, we have doubled the number and rate of cases; 200 more people have died (a 50% increase); and we have lost our position as best in the region for controlling spread of the disease.

#Wisconsin is now poised to lose its best-in-the-region status in terms of infection rate. #Ohio has been improving and, especially after yesterday, WI has not been.

#Wisconsin, rather unbelievably at this point, is still looking better than its neighbors, having the best numbers in all of these measures with the exception of number of dead. However, it won't be long until #Iowa catches up to us.
To me, this shows how well @DHSWI and @GovEvers "Safer at Home" was working. Now three weeks out from the court decision ending it, what happens in the data from here is anyone's guess.

2/ Again, this is before Wisconsin's "chaos" starts showing in the data. We have a few more days at least. But please note, IT WAS WORKING. Wisconsin remains the best-contained, least fatal state on the list.
3/ This is from the end of April, showing just WI and #Iowa. At the time, Iowa was claiming success with it's mostly-open regional approach. Compared to Wisconsin, based on today's figures, Iowa's been a massive failure. Image

As documented by @TheAtlantic's always-excellent @JamesFallows, one of the underappreciated factors in 2016 election is the failure of #journalism to do its job (one Jim story-- he has many others).
...My thoughts on how to prevent repeat in 2020: <thread>…
In 2016, MSM obsessively covered @HillaryClinton emails, while ignoring the far-more-important story of #FBI investigation of the Trump campaign. This failure had a major impact on the election's outcome. My analysis is shaped by experience in both in #journalism and politics:
We're seeing exactly the same dynamic in the 2020 campaign that we saw in 2016: MSM is focusing on horserace issues & GOP talking points, rather than delving into SUBSTANTIVE differences between the candidates. This could determine outcome of Dem primaries-- & general election.
