Dr. Simone Kolysh, an American sociologist and agender mother of 4, is seeking transgender and non-binary people, their partners, and healthcare providers (particularly doulas and midwives) to participate in a qualitative study on the relationship between gender & fertility,
infertility, pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period. You do not need to have been pregnant or a parent to participate; this is about the connection between being trans, nonbinary, and our reproductive journeys, healthcare experiences, and intersections between race, class,

An astonishing number of people believe "we" have good to excellent healthcare in the United States.

Let's talk about (and look at) lots of ways this isn't true.

And hopefully, after some of this, you'll be more motivated to support improvements to our #healthcare
Analysis of a 2015 report from the Commonwealth Fund:

"In sum, the U.S. health care system is the most expensive in the world, but Americans continue to live relatively unhealthier and shorter lives than peers in other high-income countries."…
Report Highlight:
"The U.S. spends more on health care as a share of the economy — nearly twice as much as the average OECD country — yet has the lowest life expectancy and highest suicide rates among the 11 nations."

#nofgm first time you become pregnant. You absolutely filled with anxiety sometimes coupled with joy. But overtaken by anxiety. You start to worry heavily. You think .omg how will I going to deliver this baby. Will I die or will the baby die.
You also start to worry about how professionals are going to react to you when they see your genital. The fear of that is massive then you have language barrier too. I was going though melt down. Couldn't stop worrying. Lost lots of weight too.
The biggest worry was how is this baby going to come from. Will I die, will the baby die or will we both die. I cant really put into proper word how petrified I was. As the time got near, my anxiety started to take over. I was nervous wreck .couldn't sleep at night.

As abortion rights and provision continue to dominate legal attacks in courts, becoming a fervent question for campaigners in upcoming 2020 political debates, and advocacy increases given the obliteration of rights on the state level, physicians, please remember a few things:
Midwives, advanced practice clinicians (APCs), nurses, residents, students, counselors, support staff and advocates are critical to abortion provision. There are many places where the clinic cannot open if the nurse is not present, even if the physician or provider is.
When it comes to the actual handing-over of abortion pills & the most common abortion procedures like aspiration, physicians & advanced practice clinicians (APCs), including midwives, are skilled providers and nationwide are very active providers in the abortion community.

🚨Thread alert: I have some things to say about Doug Ford *retroactively* cutting funding for @CMO_OSFO. #midwives #onpoli #fempoli
The work of Midwives is sacred. They literally usher new life into the world. They work with moms and their newborns for weeks after birth to make sure they are supported and healthy. The work of midwives is also gendered work.
It's work that inherently holds less value socially because it is caring work done predominantly by women for women. We literally just proved this in a groundbreaking court case won by midwives that showed the Ontario Government was discriminating & underpaying them.
