🧵 THREAD N°17 : #blockchain et #environnement

La blockchain est régulièrement pointée du doigt pour son impact environnemental, certains allant jusqu'à dire qu'il faut bannir les cryptos.

Mais qu'en est-il vraiment ? Peut-on trouver d'autres solutions ?

Thanks to @GeoffCutmore & @cnbcKaren for having me on the show this morning.

Here's a short thread of the notes - entitled, "Time to Get Real?" - which I put together in preparation.
They should hopefully be self-explanatory:-

You've heard it here before: pay out or pay down is a big part of the #inflation equation:-
Yes, there's a "V" - or at least a flipped square root sign - underway, but will it extend far enough & fast enough?

#GameofThrones used #Iceland's #Thingvellir Park as the #BloodyGate. Its landscape is caused by the Eurasian and #NorthAmerican tectonic plates meeting there and pulling apart at a rate of 2 cms per year. This made a rift valley: low land between 2 separating continents.

Former #mines and #quarries often become parks and protected areas. This thread shows some examples in #Halifax, #Dartmouth, #Shelbourne, #Truro, #LunenburgCounty and #KemptShore.

#KiwanisPark in #Truro was developed as a gravel pit in the 1930s to help build Route 2. Like a lot of former pits and #quarries, the site has filled with water and become a natural oasis in the heart of the town.

Former mines and quarries are often hidden in plain view! #PointPleasantPark contains 50+ former quarries. The stone was used to build walls and forts in the park. For example, slate from the #QuarryPond helped build the #MartelloTower.

New #mines are often found next to old mines - historical sites worked with basic tools and little science can today be mined profitably and environmentally-responsibly with heavy equipment and sophisticated science and engineering.

At the #MooseRiver #gold mine, tailings from a century ago are being remediated by modern #mining. Historic tailings are dug up and placed in a special cell in the mine's #tailings facility to contain them and ensure they don't continue interacting with the environment.

This is the anticline at the #MooseRiver #gold mine. It was formed by the collision of #NorthAmerica and #NorthAfrica 325 million years ago. Layers of horizontal sedimentary rock were crumpled into #anticlines (domes) and #synclines (troughs) - a series of rock waves.
#nspoli #NS ImageImageImage
The #Anticline hosts the Touquoy #gold deposit. Its domes trapped melted, gold-containing rock as it rose from deep in #earth's crust. It flowed into fractures in the rock, creating quartz veins with gold. There are also tiny disseminated particles of gold throughout.
#nspoli #NS ImageImage
The #MooseRiver #gold mine is the first in a series of proposed gold #mines along the #EasternShore. About 300 people work there and the other mines would create 100s more jobs for #NovaScotians.
#Mining employs 5500 in #NS and is the highest-paying #resource industry.

#Mining built #NS!
The #Amherst Red Stone #Quarry was on James Donalds' farm, east of Willow St. (1889-1914). It provided #sandstone for many Amherst heritage buildings including Bank of #NovaScotia (built 1907), Trinity-St. Stephen’s (1906) and 1st Baptist Church (1895).
#nspoli ImageImageImage
"Busy #Amherst" grew rapidly after the #IntercolonialRailway was built through town in 1876 and with the growth of industries like #coal #mining, transforming it from a village to a bustling industrial town. Many of its beautiful buildings date from that era.
#nspoli #NovaScotia ImageImage
Today, the #Amherst Red Stone #Quarry is a lovely pond in a field. Former #mines and #quarries are often hidden in plain sight!

FACTS ABOUT GOLD AND THE ENVIRONMENT
#Gold #mining is bringing 100s of millions of $ in investment to #NovaScotia and creating 100s of jobs for #NovaScotians.
Modern mining is a sophisticated science-based activity that takes proper care of the enviro.

@Guysboro #Reclamation - Before getting operating permits, #NovaScotia #mining companies must get government approval of reclamation plans and post reclamation bonds that ensure funds are available to properly take care of sites.
#nspoli #NS #minerals #geology Image
@Guysboro Water Management: Mine operators are required to treat, strictly monitor and test water, and report to @nsgov. Water is usually recycled on-site. Water released back into a river or lake is usually cleaner after it has been used in a mine or quarry than it was beforehand.

Many #NovaScotia #mines/#quarries in the 1800s used tramways (horse-drawn wagons on rails) to transport rock. They were ancestors to our first railways because they showed the advantage of steel rails (instead of wood) and gave a platform for early locomotive experiments.
#nspoli Image
#NovaScotia's first railway (meaning it was powered by steam, not horses) was the Albion Mines Railway in Stellarton, built in 1839 to haul coal from the #Stellarton mines to docks in #Pictou Harbour. It was only the second steam railway in Canada. It operated until 1961.
#nspoli Image
Samson, the oldest locomotive in Canada, was 1 of the iron horses imported from England in 1839 to haul Albion Mines trains. Retired in 1883, it was displayed at Chicago's World Fair, in Baltimore, #Halifax and #NewGlasgow. Today it's at the Stellarton Museum of Industry.
