#MintPlainFacts | A week from now, FM Nirmala Sitharaman will present the 2nd consecutive Union Budget with an eye on free-flowing spending taps to prop up the fragile economy.

But imminent bond redemptions in the coming years present one big hurdle.

livemint.com/budget/expecta…
Healthy tax collections, which are likely to continue into 2022-23, could provide some wiggle room to keep up the capital expenditure.

#MintPlainFacts: livemint.com/budget/expecta…
Loosening the fiscal deficit target to allow spending is no longer an option. Rather, Sitharaman will be expected to tighten it to rein in debt. More worryingly, a third of the additional spending is on account of subsidies.

#MintPlainFacts | Last week, the Congress pledged to field women in 40% of the seats in the upcoming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. At the outset, it could be seen as a way to boost the dismal representation of women in Indian politics.

livemint.com/politics/news/…
In the 1980s and 1990s, the gap was still around 9-10%.

But in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, male voter turnout exceeded the female turnout only marginally. By 2019, the gap had almost closed.

livemint.com/politics/news/…
This was not simply a national-level trend: women outnumbered men in voter turnout across most states.

In 2014, this was true for 12 of 29 states, but the trend reversed in 2019, with women voter turnout exceeding men’s in 16 states.

#MintPlainFacts | The biggest party in the ruling NDA now leans less on allies than before, given its own size in the Lok Sabha, and the growth in its social base.

#BiharElections2020 #ElectionsWithMint

livemint.com/politics/news/…
#MintPlainFacts | As many as 15 political parties left NDA between 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections. While this dented NDA’s strength in the LS towards the latter half of its term, BJP and NDA were able to recoup their losses and posted an even more impressive victory in 2019.
#MintPlainFacts | After 2019 elections, NDA has already lost 21 Lok Sabha seats, primarily due to the exit of the Shiv Sena.

It's possible that BJP may be able to attract new parties to join the alliance ahead of the next elections, just as it did ahead of the 2019 elections.
