(1/7) Here is my extended thread on the #MO01 Democratic primary. On August 4, activist @CoriBush defeated 10-term incumbent Lacy Clay in a rematch of their 2018 bout. Bush dropped some in her southwest base, but improved everywhere else, especially in Clay's northeast base. Image
(2/7) #MO01 has distinct racial divides due to the legacy of redlining and white flight. The famed Delmar Divide splits the district into distinct northern and southern halves. Note that Cori Bush has done better in the south, while Lacy Clay has done better in the north. Image
(3/7) Arguably an even bigger #MO01 dividing line between Lacy Clay and Cori Bush is educational attainment. In 2018, note that pockets of white voters with fewer Bachelor's degrees in the far south and northwest still voted for Clay. They mostly swung toward Bush in 2020. Image

Cori Bush defeated 10-term #MO01 Rep. William Lacy Clay in Democratic primary tonight. Lacy Clay has represented St. Louis area House seat since 2001, succeeding his father Bill who was 1st elected to Congress in 1968. Bush will face GOP primary winner Anthony Rogers in the fall.
Rep. Clay (D-MO) is 7th Congressman to lose his party's nomination this year joining fellow Democrats Dan Lipinski (IL) and Eliot Engel (NY) as well as Republicans Steve King (IA), Denver Riggleman (VA), Scott Tipton (CO) and Steve Watkins (KS) who also lost his primary tonight.

I fight because I know what it’s like to live paycheck to paycheck. I’ve felt the weight of student & medical debt, & I’ve lived unhoused as a single mother. I’m not alone—for too many people in #MO01, our reality is one of struggle & survival.
#STL consistently ranks top in the nation for violent crime, police shootings, & sexual disease transmission. Over the last 20 yrs, our unemployment rates have risen, our unhoused population has grown, & our communities are as segregated as ever. It doesn’t have to be this way.
Rep. @LacyClayMO1 has presided over this district for two decades, w/ little to show for it. We deserve a congresswoman who truly represents us—all of us. We deserve someone who will fight for real change we can feel. I’m running, bc we deserve a champion. I am that champion.

STL is reaching peak summer temperatures. We are in a global pandemic. Over 40 million people are unemployed. 5 million have lost healthcare.

And thousands of people in my district are about to lose access to lifesaving utilities. This is not ok. stltoday.com/news/local/met…
For Black folks in #MO01, the closest “grocery store” may be miles away.

If you rely on public transit, it could take hours round trip to buy food.

If you are working poor like I’ve been, you can’t afford to lose the food in your fridge because your electricity is shut off.
As a working class nurse, I’ve experienced shutoffs myself and I know the risks. High temperatures & humidity can increase:

➡️ Dehydration
➡️ Heat exhaustion
➡️ Asthma
➡️ Domestic violence rates
➡️ Violent crime rates

People NEED access to cool air and running water.

In 2018, #MO01 Congressman Lacy Clay was challenged from the left in his primary by activist Cori Bush. He won by a decisive but soft 59-35, considering his large cash advantage and high name recognition. They are heading for a rematch two weeks from today. (1/4) #ElectionTwitter Image
MO-01's racial makeup is plurality black among all residents, and the Dem primary electorate is majority black. Compared to the 2018 election results, you may note that Cori Bush excelled with white voters in southern #MO01, but there's more to the story. (2/4) #ElectionTwitter Image
Here is a map of #MO01's educational attainment, highlighting the percentage of residents with Bachelor's degrees. Compared to the 2018 election results, Cori Bush's support was very highly correlated with Bachelor's degree attainment. (3/4) #ElectionTwitter Image
