@HelenZiaReal kicks off today's @EthnicMediaSvc briefing on the isolation and loneliness of elderly immigrants. Many of the people she interviewed for her book had never told others their stories of pain. ethnicmediaservices.org/media-briefing…"
"Seniors are being attacked," says @HelenZiaReal "So many of our elders are still working and so vulnerable," she said, referring to mass shootings at places of work.
"How do we make invisible people visible? We talk to them, we ask them. I asked my mother a question, and as she told me her story, she became lighter," says Helen Zia @HelenZiaReal @invisiblepeople

11 people were killed after a gunman opened fire in #MontereyPark and 7 were killed in #HalfMoonBay.

In this moment of grief and frustration, I’ll explain the whole scope of these recent tragedies and what we can do to prevent them. 🧵
The nation was rocked when CA had to deal with two mass shootings just one day apart from each other.

This tragedy comes days after brand new CDC data crunched by @bradybuzz shows 2021 had the most mass shootings and gun deaths in recorded U.S. history.

Every day in America, +300 people are shot.

Some of these tragedies make the news, but most of them do not.

They include unintentional shootings, domestic violence, suicide and more.

My work focuses on community violence, which can actually be reduced significantly without changes to gun laws or regulations. But with the victims of #MontereyPark and #HalfMoonBay in our minds and hearts, let's not kid ourselves...
... all forms of gun violence - including suicides, accidents, domestic homicides, and mass shootings - would be easier to prevent with commonsense restrictions to accessing deadly firearms on the books.
There is no perfect policy out there, no single solution. But if we made some obvious changes to our laws, we could make it far harder for criminals, terrorists, abusers, and potential mass murderers to access the weapons they want.

As the #MontereyPark shooter was a 72-year-old man, an observation about how some Asian American elders consume media lately: Unlike the past, when they mostly read Asian-language newspapers/watched TV news, many now get their info from YouTube. (1/6)
They watch video after video from their suggestions. As with all media bubbles, this produces an echo chamber, offering ideology disguised as news. This is exacerbated by language & cultural differences that already keep them from engaging a wider range of sources. (2/6)
For example, my father sometimes watches “news” videos that are virulently anti-China, likely disseminated by Bannonite forces that exalt the US. Once he clicks on one, more appear, & then they are constantly in his suggestions. (3/6)

I need everyone reporting on the devastating #lunarnewyear shooting to know a few things about #montereypark (thread)
#MontereyPark is home for my diasporic family. It is where you find the best damn Chinese food in the U.S. It is the 1st Asian ethnoburb: an ethnic enclave in the 'burbs that thrives b/c it refuses to assimilate, instead unapologetically catering to its own immigrant community.
Formerly an exclusive white middle class suburb, MP became “the first suburban Chinatown” by the 80s, when "highly skilled" Asians, SEAsian refugees, and working class undocumented immigrants started settling in MP and its surrounding areas now known as San Gabriel Valley (SGV).

There is no evidence released at this moment or the time of your tweet that suggests or indicates the shooting was motivated by white supremacy. The gunman is still at-large and your tweet is spreading unconfirmed claims that may endanger residents in the area.
Chester Chong, chairman of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce L.A., told ABC 7 the Monterey Park mass shooting was over a domestic dispute. L.A. County Sheriff Robert Luna just confirmed that the at-large gunman is Asian.
Rep. Schiff, the wanted gunman is Asian. Law enforcement never stated there was evidence this was motivated by anti-AAPI racism.

Late last night, a gunman murdered 10 people and injured at least 10 others at a Lunar New Year celebration in Monterey, CA. Monterey, east of L.A., is more than 65% Asian and 27% Latino. The gunman is still at large. My heart is with Monterey. nytimes.com/live/2023/01/2…
I meant to write Monterey Park, not Monterey. Apologies.
