Geizer Hill, the other side of hwy 102 from #BayersLake, was forested back then. An article in the Feb. 1898 edition of Canadian Mining Reviews even described it as being “about three miles from Halifax,” a reminder of how much #Halifax has grown over the past century.

According to the article, “a trial run of one ton [of ore] gave six penny weights, eight grains." One penny weight is 1.5 grams so this test of the ore produced about 9 grams of #gold, or a 1/3 of an ounce.

Most of the mining and development in this district was done by the Oxford #Gold Mining Company which was very active from 1881-1896. By 1882 Oxford had acquired a number of areas north of the lake, erected a 10-stamp mill and become a steady producer.

Under J. M. Reid, the company’s mine manager, Lake Catcha became one of the most productive #gold districts in Nova Scotia.

Gold was discovered in Whiteburn, six miles southwest of #Caledonia, in 1885. A forest fire reportedly ravaged the area and uncovered the gold. Jim McGuire, supposedly hiding out from the tax collector, found it in the barrens near his home and triggered the Whiteburn #gold rush.
It’s said that he registered the find in his brother’s name and hid his earnings - $5000 in the first year - in the floorboards of his cousin’s house to throw the authorities off his trail.
By 1887 three mines and mills were operating and mining continued until 1905.

At the #MooseRiver #gold mine, tailings from a century ago are being remediated by modern #mining. Historic tailings are dug up and placed in a special cell in the mine's #tailings facility to contain them and ensure they don't continue interacting with the environment.

This is the anticline at the #MooseRiver #gold mine. It was formed by the collision of #NorthAmerica and #NorthAfrica 325 million years ago. Layers of horizontal sedimentary rock were crumpled into #anticlines (domes) and #synclines (troughs) - a series of rock waves.

The #Anticline hosts the Touquoy #gold deposit. Its domes trapped melted, gold-containing rock as it rose from deep in #earth's crust. It flowed into fractures in the rock, creating quartz veins with gold. There are also tiny disseminated particles of gold throughout.
