Victorian biomedical science and innovation come of age. #mRNA #Protein #Vaccine

A somewhat long thread:

Our #mRNA vaccine was conceptualised, invented, developed and manufactured (mostly) right here in #Australia. And has now reached #clinical trials.

2/ To say the least: It has been a thrilling journey.

All I want is to say a few words about innovating a new class of medicine and mention some of the important people and events related to the #mRNA vaccine.

This is my short and personal tribute to them and the events
To translate a product from bench to clinic in two years is not easy- but to do that with a completely new entity that has never been manufactured or developed in the history of Australia - mRNA vaccines- is even more challenging. But our team was up to the challenge.

🧵Thread - basic science research in Oz

1. I sat down to read the #NHMRC Corporate Plan and I'm very disquieted about the implications for #BasicScience research in Australia

Is there space for basic science research in health and medical science in Australia?
2. My major concern is the reduced focus on basic science research with increased emphasis on translational research with 'tangible benefits for society'

In principle I don't disagree, and translation is the major underpinning for #MRFF which is an very important policy action
3. My understanding of the #MRFF is to complement the #NHMRC

Broadly speaking it seems NHMRC fills knowledge gaps with basic science and MRFF seeks to address development of drugs/treatments/cures etc and support consumers/industry etc with some overlap between these two bodies

2 days ago I tweeted about @RepDougCollins using his military uniform in a @CollinsforGA campaign ad. It's much worse and advocates are calling for a real investigation and UCMJ punishment for the Congressman for violating DOD regs and norms. Strap in for a thread! #Georgia
So what's the reg? DoD Directive 1344.10, “Political Activities by Members of the Armed Forces,” details what is and what is not allowed in campaign materials for active, reserve, or retired members of the military running for office. It's very precise. esd.whs.mil/Portals/54/Doc…
Only photos of the candidate in uniform allowed are photos as part of the their biographical information, when accompanied by other non-military photos, and when also accompanied by a disclaimer stating that the appearance of the photo in uniform doesn’t imply a DoD endorsement.

Shockingly, 1/4 of Medical Research Future Fund grants were awarded without due process. Genuine progress in any field of endeavour can only be achieved through the advancement of novel ideas that subsequently withstand questioning and criticism from experts in that field. Image
Deciding the merits of one research pursuit relative to another is a matter of judgement and debate; it requires a broad range of expertise, the absence of bias and adherence to consistent and transparent processes. It is not a task that should rest with a single person.
The integrity of this decision-making process is particularly important in the context of awarding research funding through competitive schemes, such as those through the @nhmrc
