My first thread was written as a pamphlet. My goal was to show that Sergei is not a moral beacon nor a principled fighter against Putin, but an opportunist with no moral basis to say the things he says today.

So, let's look at some facts.

While looking at something unrelated, we ran across a bulk follow botnet created in May 2018. A few of the accounts in this network have recently reactivated. #ThursdayThoughts

This bulk follow botnet consists of (at least) 46414 accounts, all created in May 2018. (It's likely we missed a few.) None has ever liked a tweet, and most have no tweets or followers of their own but follow between 50 and 200 accounts.
Who do the accounts in this network follow? It's kinda all over the place, although social media marketing and cryptocurrency turn up as repeated themes. The account followed by the largest share of the network is Indian politician @indutiwarijbp.
Donald Trump will be an exception to the main problem with Twitter bans: they are routinely and overtly evaded. This is a problem of both policy and capacity.
Policy:
* make it a violation to knowingly promote banned accounts.
* if you use human capacity, as well as algorithms, could track the ways #myfirsttweet that banned accounts try to recover their followers quickly.

On 9th January 2021 the same notorious antisemite that had been banned > 30 times when I wrote a July 2019 piece about it (and gave Twitter a dossier compiled by others) has a new #myfirsttweet tweet boasting about being a banned user.
The link in this "Looking to boost your #Followers?" tweet is dead, but the fake follower botnet the account that tweeted it belongs to is still around.

We downloaded the followers of several of the accounts followed by @jonathanling209, and repeated the process on accounts followed by their followers. Many of these accounts were followed by hundreds or thousands of accounts created in bulk in 2018/2019 (the circled regions).
We found a total of 6882 accounts created in batches between March 2018 and February 2019, with the majority created in January 2019. Many of these accounts have never tweeted. Those which have did so exclusively via "Twitter Web Client".
