If #COVID19 is really subsiding in severity & prevalence like so many believe, then please explain the curves:
Cases in Canada appear to be on a disappearing course (Note the grey area is subject to adjustment as other cases are added and the last several months are incomplete)
However, looking at deaths it looks like the same ole pandemic (the far end of the curve is highly inaccurate and incomplete ie, deaths will climb as more data arrives):
This leaves me with šŸ¤¦šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļø thoughts:
- We are capturing fewer & fewer cases, even high risk cases, as time goes on.
- We are ignoring the deaths of the vulnerable who we know are:
- The elderly, chronically ill, immunocompromised, racial minorities, the impoverished
Have we given up?

On the advice of the CMOH, yesterday the Ford government lifted Ontarioā€™s proof of #COVID19 vaccination requirements effective March 1st.

While some have simply dismissed this as capitulation to the "Freedom Convoy," it's actually much more complex.

In evaluating their decision, we must 1st consider whether a 2-dose vaccine certificate remains justified by a compelling purpose.

In July 2021 when Delta was dominant, our @COVIDSciOntario brief outlined key considerations for vaccine certificates.

At the time, we found proof of vaccination requirements were effective in:

1. Increasing vaccine uptake

2. Reducing transmission in higher-risk settings (e.g. bars & restaurants)

3. Protecting our health care system by excluding the unvaccinated from higher-risk settings

#NACI (Canada's advisory board of vaccine scientists) has summarized the latest science: they recommend mRNA over AstraZeneca as the 2nd dose of #COVID19 vaccine. Here's why... 1/n canada.ca/en/public-healā€¦
1) It seems to be more EFFECTIVE. AZ-mRNA and mRNA-mRNA appear to give a more effective immune response against variants of concern (and the delta variant is spreading in Canada), based on small studies + big real world experience. 2/n
2) It appears to be SAFE. We mix and match a lot of vaccines, safely, and the aforementioned studies + experience show the safety of AZ-mRNA too. 3/n

From some reason, this @BusinessInsider article from Feb 23rd is making the rounds today on social media: businessinsider.com/new-data-callsā€¦

The sensationalist headline "Scotland's vaccine rollout suggests delaying the 2nd #COVID19 shot is a bad idea" requires some serious nuance.

The news article references a Feb 19th pre-print: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfā€¦

This means that the study was neither peer-reviewed nor finalized when posted.

The pre-print reported a combined 58% vaccine effectiveness for #Pfizer and #AstraZeneca starting 42 days after 1 dose.

This pre-print went on to be peer-reviewed and published last week in @TheLancet: thelancet.com/journals/lanceā€¦

@TheLancet study reported a combined 74% vaccine effectiveness for #Pfizer and #AstraZeneca starting 42 days after the first dose (77% for the #Pfizer vaccine alone).

Iā€™m sorry to say that in a Canadian context, #NACI has caused significant harm in relation to their shortsighted recommendations regarding #AstraZeneca in the context of dwindling supply AND the fact that AZ is approved by Health Canada.
This is an example of how effective communication is literally a matter of life and death. In the UK, rapid roll out of #AZ and lockdown restrictions helped them get out of their mess, yet in Canada we will be modeling acopalytic scenarios while the public remains misinformed.
