That one time when one of your absolute favorite #medtwitter physician storytellers @TheRealDoctorT blessed your #NarrativeintheTimeofCOVID @EmoryDeptofMed Monday Night Zoom.

It.
Was.
DOOOOPE.

For those still unsure about the power of #medtwitter? Think again.

Dr. T:🙏🏾!
P.S. Shout out to @ETSshow, the ultimate #medtwitter connector and amplifier, for being the way I found @TheRealDoctorT.

I consider BOTH Mark and Sayed friends--yet I've yet to meet either in person.#Medtwitter connections for the WIN.
At Monday Night Zoom, we snap on mute. These snaps are for you, @TheRealDoctorT. Thank you again, friend.

“We’ve got someone,” the charge nurse said.
I turned and raised a brow.
The morning had been quiet.
I had a patient now.

We’d moved to telemedicine
for nearly every person
But, now and then, some must come in
so problems will not worsen.

“She cleared the screens,” the nurse went on,
“She’s not a PUI. She got her meds filled just last week.”
A head shake, then a sigh.

I clicked her name, went in the chart
and tried my best to glean
some insights on this patient
who’d come in to be seen.
3/
Her chart was filled with years of notes—all from primary care

“A Grady Baby” one note said--a fact we often share.

A special designation
for those born within these walls
and some of whom recall the segregation
of these halls

Red shirt, khaki pants.
Same happy face—even behind the mask.

You: “Dr. Manning! Where you been?”
Me: “I been around!”

*elbow air bump*

You: “This your patient?”
Me: “It is. You coming for her?”
You: “Yeah. But I can wait for you.”
2/
Me: “You sure?”
You: “Yeah. Go ahead.”
Me: "Awesome."
You: *thumbs up*

Concentrating while donning my PPE. Between each step, I use more hand foam. Then more hand foam. Even when I wasn’t sure because I figured more sanitizer is almost always right.

Yeah.

I slipped into the room, hands up like that of a surgeon. I greeted my pt--and also the environmental services person cleaning up something in the room.

Yeah.

My pt and I chatted first—about how she was feeling. And also about the weather. (Unseasonably warm that day.)

Them: “I was scared to go to the hospital. . but I couldn’t breathe.”
Me: “You did the right thing.”
Them: “I didn’t want to go, though. . . been watching too much news and reading too much, man.”
Me: “Yeah.”

*silence* Image

Them: “Hey--you ever heard of The Door of No Return in West Africa?”
Me: “I . . . have.”
Them: “It’s weird. I was walking into the ER feeling like I was going through that tunnel. Like I might never come back.”

*silence*

Me: "Damn."
Them: “Heavy, right?”
3/
Them: “Like this wave of panic hit me when they sent my family home.”
Me: “Damn.”
Them: “But I couldn’t breathe. So I know I needed to stay.”

*silence*

I hated the thought of my friend feeling that way. Feeling even a shred of that kind of terror.

But I got it. I did.
