I'm unable to take part in the CAHS #NationalAutismStrategy consultation sessions today due to the fact that I'm with my kids all day, but I wanted to leave a few tips for parents who are taking part, especially mothers. 🧵/1
1) CAHS admins will ask you...repeatedly...to include your full name. DO NOT DO THIS. Your first name is just fine.
The reason you don't want to do this is that you will be in the main room for approx. the first 45 minutes along with "Actually Autistic Self Advocates". /2

Since some of you have been threatened and/or harassed in other ways by these people, be smart, protect yourself, and use your first name only. For the record, I've openly noted that these threats take place with CAHS admins, but it's likely not enough. /3

Throughout Canada, autism programs are underfunded, limit the amount of services one can receive, reduce services available based on age, impose age cut-offs and have long wait lists.

Many families end up draining their assets and life savings in an attempt to make up the difference. This is an outrageous situation for a country that pride’s itself on its universal healthcare system.

Also worth noting that this 'consultation' process as it is now presumes that a #NationalAutismStrategy as proposed by CASDA is a done deal. No recognition of the fact that Autistic people & Autistic led orgs (who OPPOSE the NAS) haven't been meaningfully consulted at any point.
...which is actually what I'd expect from a lobbying group whose co-chair is the exec. director of A$ Canada, sister to the US org whose financial founder is currently being boycotted for being a Trump supporter despite *gestures at everything*. *cough*A$ is a hate group*cough*

What is being done to ensure that there will be genuine, meaningful dialogue with Canadian Autistic-led self-advocacy and civil rights organizations before creating or implementing this strategy? 2/4
What independent and long-term studies are being done in Canada to ensure that the therapies that Autistic people are being given are safe & beneficial to the Autistic person themselves (vs. parents and caregivers, teachers etc.) before the expansion of services under a NAS? 3/4
