Haven't had a chance to properly commemorate #NationalPoetryMonth yet, so wanted to quickly share a few of my favorite American poems as well as a couple current folks continuing these awesome legacies:
Sarah Piatt's my favorite poet, & "The Palace-Burner" my favorite American poem. Empathy, history, self-reflection, parenting, doubts, inspirations, it's all there & then some.

Langston Hughes is a very close second, & while that's due to the incredible breadth & depth of his works, I'd highlight "Let America Be America Again" as the best single critical patriotic cultural work I know:

My first hard copies of LITANY WITH WINGS just arrived and my heart’s cracking open. It was one thing reading the proof PDFs (again and again while I worked with @andrewheiss to put the finishing touches on the collection). @BccPress 
It’s very much another thing to hold the finished product in my hands—seeing the poems on the page, feeling the paper that holds ~sixteen years of my work. Hear those pages whirring? Like wings…
This collection is, in the end, a devotional book. It represents my wrestling w/God, religion, Mormon theology, language, faith, my roles as husband, father, son. It represents my ongoing faith de/reconstruction, my feeling after hope + healing + grace + the divine feminine.
I'm reflecting today on how deeply meaningful it's been amid this crisis to be a part of @Poetsorg and sharing poems with a growing audience seeking comfort and courage. We know that this moment calls on our creativity, generosity of spirit, and willingness to help others.
In the past few weeks the Academy of American Poets helped launch, and we are continuing to work on, Artist Relief. We hope poets with dire financial need will apply to this national emergency fund. artistrelief.org
We're advocating for more emergency funding for poetry and literary organizations nationwide working in partnership with the #PoetryCoaltion and our colleagues @CLMPorg @witshouston @LitNet_org

The looming unfamiliar, so easily dismissed during daylight hours,
hunches menacingly right over there, occasionally giving out
a short sharp bark of what must pass for laughter in its tribe.

Undaunted, I stare into its face,
searching those pitiless features for some clue
to its intent, its content, its torment.
There it waits, mostly silent, daring me to walk right up and own it.
