Christian fascism is a far-right political ideology that denotes an intersection between (neo)fascism & Christianity.

It is sometimes referred to as #Christofascism, a neologism coined in 1970 by the liberation theologian Dorothee Sölle.
Most fascist movements portray themselves as defenders of Christianity & the traditional Christian family against atheists & amoral humanists. Modern #neofascists claim "Judeo-Christian values must be defended", or are "under attack from western liberals".
This was true of Catholic fascist movements in Poland, Spain, Portugal, France, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, & Brazil.

We see the rise of divisive, intolerant, nationalistic & fundamentalist #Christofascist rhetoric in the USA, & now here in the UK too.

1. to my foreign colleagues asking me about #neofascists, #Meloni, etc: #neofascists were legitimised and integrated in Italian politics by #Berlusconi, whose governments were highly appreciated by the US because they "automatically engage on our behalf" (#Wikileaks cables)
2. while #Berlusconi became very close to Putin (and according to the #WikiLeaks cables, this was the only reason of friction with US),he was very instrumental in making Italy the launching pad of US wars after 9/11. The US greatly appreciated it

The fall of #RoeVsWade is a shocking setback to women’s rights – but it also does not come out of the blue: it is the result of decades of anti-abortion strategising by the US Christian right, which has very strong links to some Snr UK Tory MPs.

The 1980s saw the rise of the religious right as a political force in the US. They established law schools with the express intention of reversing legal secularism & promoting a vision of law rooted in their version of Christian theology.

By training Christian lawyers, they could challenge issues they objected to through the courts.

Amy Coney Barrett, a Supreme Court justice nominated by Donald Trump, has been a speaker at a fellowship programme aimed at promoting Christian law.

Some people have asked me why I describe the UK Government as #neofascist, rather than just straightforwardly #fascist.

While of course there are many similarities, there are some crucial differences.

Like their fascist predecessors, #neofascists embrace populist nationalism & authoritarian values, attack Marxist & other left-wing ideologies, indulge in racist & xenophobic scapegoating, & portray themselves as protectors of traditional national culture & religion.
Whereas fascists assigned much of the blame for their countries’ economic problems to the machinations of bolsheviks, liberals, & Jews, British neofascists tend to focus on non-European immigrants, arriving in increasing numbers from the 1990s.
