#Depression is associated with alterations in corticostriatal reward circuitry. One pathophysiological pathway that may drive these changes is #inflammation... Image
...This study examined whether increased inflammation in depression affects corticostriatal reward circuitry to lead to deficits goal-directed motor behavior. Resting-state fMRI maging was conducted on 48 medically stable, unmedicated outpatients with major depression...

Was #TheDarkKnight's Two-Face the product of brain injury? Harvey Dent was hospitalized after surviving the explosion and disfiguring burns that transformed him into the psychopathic villain, Two-Face. The background offers insight into the villain's psychological origins. (1/6)
A monitor shows a computed tomography (CT) scan of Dent's head, which reveals contusions (blood) in both frontal lobes of the brain. Such contusions are common after traumatic brain injury, resulting from the brain striking the front of the skull during sudden deceleration. (2/6)
The frontal lobes support higher-order cognition, such as planning, emotional regulation, and impulse control. The ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), the frontal region most vulnerable to contusions, is important for moral judgement and emotional decision-making. (3/6)

Now attending the #ESHG2020 session on neuropsychiatry. As an #ActuallyAutistic person, this was very insightful. The research presented was also interesting, but what I gained most insight in was how autism is viewed and talked about. And it needs to change. (1/n)
Autism is still seen as a disease. While there are definitely impairments, in some people more than others, these are often impairments that can be improved by talking TO the autistic person in question about their individual needs. (2/n)
Some autistic people have bigger impairments, which are often due to intellectual disability. Again, communicate WITH the autistic person to facilitate them. Good to realize that some autistic people are non-verbal, but there are alternatives to verbal communication. (3/n)
