Too many people are falling through the gaps in the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, like my constituent Steven who is getting no support because of the payroll cut-off date for the scheme. dailyrecord.co.uk/news/local-new…? @RutherglenRef #newstarterjustice #newstarterfurlough (1/3)
The Chancellor must act to expand support to people who are losing out through no fault of their own. I've written to him to expand the support available to those in work. #newstarterjustice #newstarterfurlough (2/3) ImageImage
I'm also delighted to back the @NewStarterJust campaign and have signed their open letter calling for the Coroanvirus Job Retention Scheme to be expanded to those who started in new jobs and who missed the current payroll cut-off date. #newstarterjustice #newstarterfurlough (3/3)

THREAD- With the new Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme available many constituents have contacted me as they've been unable to be placed on the scheme.

I've written to the Chancellor @RishiSunak to raise these issues urgently & urge the Treasury to make several changes.👇 1/8 ImageImage
I welcome the change in cut-off date from the 28th February to the 19th March but I know that more needs to be done.

The requirement for an employees RTI to be submitted on/before March 19th means many new employers will miss out- even if they joined their job before 19th. 2/8
I asked the Treasury to look at alternative ways of evidencing these new hires to ensure that people employed in March do not fall through the gaps and can access support. #newstarterfurlough

@BorisJohnson @RishiSunak
Thank you for the letter I received this morning updating the steps you are taking to combat the Coronavirus. Everything you are asking from us is reasonable enough and I will indeed stay in the house to save lives.
Now for you end of the bargain 👉
2nd page, 1st paragraph, you state "The Government will do whatever it takes to help you make ends meet and put food on the table"
This is a downright lie, no help is offered to those with the new start up companies in 2019 or those who changed jobs early last year.
You have instructed us to apply for universal credit. A system designed to force people into work because the money available is not even enough to pay the bills never mind put food on the table, you have decided not to update the T&C’s of universal credit,

2/3 @MelJStride said help is needed for those who have slipped through the net of the Government's support measures in response to #coronavirus.

Whether it's #newstarterfurlough or the time it will take for payments to reach people, "it's clear that urgent action is needed." Image
3/3 We've also published a summary of further evidence received in response to our inquiry into the economic impact of #coronavirus.

Thanks to everyone who got in touch. Image

NEW: The Treasury is resisting calls to change the date after which employees can be ‘furloughed’ on 80% wage because of the risk of fraud. However workers who moved jobs in recent weeks can ask to be put back on the payroll and furloughed by their old employer.
MORE: The 28 Feb date is being used so the Treasury can use PAYE data to verify that furloughed employees have a genuine relationship with their employer. The cliff edge potentially leaves thousands out of pocket though #newstarterfurlough
MORE: A group of workers who will certainly lose out are those who left jobs and came off their old employer’s payroll before 28 Feb but did not start another job until after that date. They are being directed towards UC and other benefits #newstarterfurlough
