Despite their centrality in science and engineering, phenomena have traditionally been a missing piece inscience education, which too often has focused on teaching general knowledge that students can have difficulty applying to real world contexts.

I know a lot of science teachers don't like teaching the history of science, or pick a model development to focus on such as models of the atom, solar system or evolution
Frequently US science teachers deemphasize history of science because the cast of characters before a certain point is not very diverse and students aren't always interested. But if it's not taught in history, where do you get the context?

Do we need to rethink how students should learn about energy in school? In our latest paper in #DISER we have started to take a closer look at that question. rdcu.be/cegKN
A thread on what we found and why it matters.
The core of the energy concept is really the idea that energy is a conserved quantity. However, students often struggle with that idea. This is maybe not surprising when we consider how often we hear things like energy consumption. #ClimateEmergency
So we looked at students learning in a new curriculum follows the suggestions in the #NGSS #NGSSchat and emphasizes the idea of energy transfer instead of energy forms and transformations.

👀NEW RESOURCE SNEAK PEEK!

Next week, we’ll be releasing our latest new resource for science educators and materials developers: #KeepTeachingScience: Successful Strategies to Adapt K-12 Science Experiences for Distance Learning 1/7
For this project, we analyzed science lessons to identify distance learning adaptations that reflect (and sometimes enhance) #NGSS instructional practices. 2/7
The adaptation of existing high-quality science materials for a distance environment CAN enhance the vision of three-dimensional standards.

We share eight common strategies to support educators and developers with adapting materials for learning at a distance. Here’s #1. 3/7

Hey #NGSSchat

If we played the (somewhat serious) game of nominating important science & engineering practices missing from the carefully chosen 8 in #NGSS / Framework, one I would quickly nominate is NOTICING.
NOTICING is an embodied & multi-sensorial practice. It is foundational to making sense of & shaping the natural-cultural world.

It supports wondering, pattern-seeking, systems theorizing, seeking relevancies, tending to relations, identifying political connections & the 8 SEPs.
NOTICING involves careful & often collaborative sensing in context — through looking, smelling, feeling, hearing & tasting. It is learned in embodied ways.

NOTICING feeds directly into the other science & engineering practices.
