It's been a year of professional growth and I've gotten to learn so much - on the field and in the newsroom. A thread of some of my reports for @newslaundry in 2021
One of my first reports was on how a combination of inadequate shelters, poor facilities, and an apathetic administration is leading to Maharashtra lagging in implementing the Centre’s Shelter for Urban Homeless Scheme.

Just before the second wave, my colleague @DikshaMunjal6 and I reported on how entertainment industry workers earning daily wages in Mumbai were suffering the brunt of the first lockdown and would be unable to take another one - though they eventually did.

Ikkarai Boluvampatti is where the Isha Foundation is headquartered on a sprawling 150-acre campus, including the Isha ashram, in blatant violation of laws and rules.

The campus is adjacent to the Bolampatty Reserve Forest, an elephant habitat.
Records obtained from the state departments of forest, town and country planning, and housing and urban development show that from 1994 to 2011, Isha constructed on 63,380 sq meters and created an artificial lake at Ikkarai Boluvampatti, without approval.

We travelled through 6 assembly constituencies to find out how voters are doing to make their decision in #WestBengalElections2021.

The idea was to figure out which govt schemes have been effective & have reached the voters.

Here is what we found.
#Thread
West Bengal State Government’s schemes for women are effective.

The most popular schemes are all directed at women & they are responding positively. Women certainly have a good opinion about Mamata Banerjee.

But, there's a catch.
The general opinion seems to be, "Didi is fine, not her party workers."

We found multiple instances where local party workers have taken commissions on the side for people to get benefits from govt schemes.

People aren't amused. At all.

It was the third day of the communal carnage in the capital that left at least 53 people dead and hundreds injured.

Shamshad, 25, who was shot in his abdomen moments before Maruf, remembers the faces in the mob, and so does Haroon: they were their neighbours. Image
Haroon says he told the investigating officer the names of the members of the mob too he recognised but when he got a copy of the FIR a few days later, he found that it did not name the men who had allegedly shot Maruf and Shamshad.

#NLSena | In June, the Delhi Police filed a chargesheet into the murder of Maruf Ali during the #DelhiRiots.

It now faces allegations of fabrication and distortion of recorded statements.

@sighyush & @Basantrajsonu report.

“There was violence in our area on Feb 24. As we were returning home at around 11 pm, we saw an armed gathering in the adjacent street...a local man who was allegedly leading the mob, yelled “Maar saale kattuon ko," recalls Maruf Ali's brother was shot dead by a mob.
“The names we gave to the Delhi police on multiple occasions do not find any mention in the chargesheet,” Haroon, Maruf's brother complained. “The men who killed him still roam free in the neighbourhood and harass us.”
