Premier Furey and MHA @Andrew_Parsons1 have been attempting to get here most of the day but quite frankly they’d need to invent teleportation to accomplish it. There’s no getting through the Wreckhouse. Our understanding is the Premier was on a flight overseas but turned back.
Our connectivity challenges continue. Cousin Sharon’s roof has sprung multiple leaks. It’s a new roof. #nlwx #hurricanFiona #PortauxBasques #Newfoundland
Even if the politicians and outside assistance scramble, there can be no response until the winds abate further and the Trans Canada near the Wreckhouse becomes passable.

I bet at least *some* of you have checked TropicalTidbits.com or windy.com and seen the 0Z Euro -- a Cat 3 hurricane (#FIONA) making landfall near St Margarets Bay next Sat AM.
Before you say "we're doomed" let me explain a bit. #NSwx #NBwx #PEwx #NLwx (1/x) Image
This is only ONE of several possible solutions. The other two major global models (GFS and CMC) show solutions that are either weaker (CMC) or much farther east (GFS).
(2/x) GFS model shows a hurricane...CMC shows a weaker post-tro...
Here are the ensembles (multiple runs of the same model with slightly perturbed initial conditions) for #FIONA.
As you can see, there's still considerable uncertainty in the track, however, the GFS is a bit farther east than the Euro.
Why? (3/x) GFS ensembles show Fiona pa...Euro ensembles are a bit fa...

Tonight marks the 40th anniversary of the Ocean Ranger tragedy, when the lives of its 84 crew members were all lost as the Hibernia platform succumbed to large waves and powerful winds. We are sharing some weather charts and maps in commemoration of the historic storm.

Here is the hand drawn surface map from the old Newfoundland Weather Office in Gander, showing the centre of the storm tracking northeast of the island.

The minimum barometric pressure recorded at St. John's was 951 mb. We can see that the barograph trace had to be manually adjusted upward, as the pressure fell off the bottom of the scale on the chart.

There are road washouts on the Trans Canada highway and it will take more than a week to reconnect, so how do CBC journalists get home? You take a ferry to another province of course. To get to St. John’s I’m headed to Sydney NS
Because my self and two colleagues from Radio Canada have a rental car we can drive to Halifax and fly back to St. John’s. It’s a 22 hour journey but it’s doable! My colleague @GarrettBarry isn’t so lucky
First it’s a 7:30 long crossing from Port aux Basques to North Sydney. Then Garrett gets to wait 10 hours, for a 16 hour crossing to Argentia, then a 3 hour drive to Gander. That’s a more than 36 hour trip for him to get home, leave Thursday night and get home Saturday afternoon

This is what people are waking up to in Port aux Basques. The tide is high so the rain has nowhere to go. Wade Osmond came home to this, there’s a couple inches of water in his basement #nlwx
This is what Wade is worried about. If this ground gives way he’ll have a brook flowing into his basement #nlwx
Here’s the Trans Canada Highway exit at Port aux Basque. The high tides are making it harder for the system to drain all this water #nlwx

The rain has started on the South West Coast of NL. Headed to Port aux Basque where 250mm+ rain had been forecast #nlwx
The seas in Port aux Basque are already pretty strong but this is an area that’s used to the wind it’s the rain that has people here worried Image
The wind and the rain just keeps coming. A lot of people here have just shrugged it off as another fall storm but the mayor is warning the rainfall amounts projected is nothing Port aux Basques has ever seen before #nlwx Image

Newfoundlanders are well known for lending a hand in a storm.

When USS Truxtun was sinking off the coast of Newfoundland in 1942, Lanier Phillips’ was told he’d be lynched if he made it ashore through the frigid and oil-covered Atlantic waters.

A thread for #MLKDay. #nlwx
Lanier thought his best chance to survive was ashore. On a small raft, he made it through the howling winds, icy waves, and driving sleet to the foot of a towering cliff.

When the Newfoundlanders found him, he was fading in and out of consciousness.

What would they do to him?
He woke and saw women nursing survivors, scrubbing the oil from their skin.

Violet Pike was exasperated.
She couldn’t remove the black from Lanier’s skin. She kept scrubbing and scrubbing to no avail.

"The oil has gotten into his pores. It just won't come off."

RNC Const. James Cadigan says police currently working on a coordinated shift change. Officers are snowshoeing to meeting points, where 4-wheel drive vehicles will meet them to get them to work.

Coordinating with plow operations as well to make this happen.

#nlwx #nltraffic
This is the first opportunity they’ve had for this, so asking people to really adhere to the declared state of emergency and stay off the roads.

@RNC_PoliceNL able to respond to emergencies, but shift change will take a couple hours.

#nlwx #nltraffic
Cadigan says not to take the risk of getting yourself stuck somewhere you’ll need emergency response to help you out.

He also says best thing people can do is to check in on neighbours, people you know.

There's a seriously big turnout for climatologist David Phillips tonight at @NLGEOCENTRE. Let's hope he does some real talk on #climatechange. He's already given a pitch for #yyt + #windpower
Plenty of chuckles from the crowd about our crummy weather (wettest... windiest... etc) stats #nlwx
David talks about the transition
1) global warming
2) climate change
What's next? 3) atmospheric terrorism
