@WHDLASD just brutalized and arrested 3 queer volunteers at #wehopride. The Sheriffs were making fun of the booth and the volunteers responded ā€œThis is why we donā€™t like cops at Prideā€ The sheriffs then attacked them and are filing bogus charges. Will update here šŸ§µ
Demand the immediate release of the WeHo 3 and to drop the bogus charges!

THREAD: On Saturday, activists held a "No Cops at Pride.

Protesters gathered outside LA Councilman Mitch O'Farrell's (D) tent, where one took and ripped a cardboard Mitch.

Staff struggled trying to take back what they alleged was stolen "personal property."

šŸŽ„: @AeonPhotoCo
The group accuses LA Council-member Mitch O'Farrell (D) of "forcing cops into our pride event every year."

One tore, stomped on, and drew on the cardboard cutout's head, and explained that "Mitch, oh bitch, no cops at pride. Killing queer people, it's quite literally a crime."
"Mitch O'Farrell, you can't hide, we charge you with genocide!" chanted the group as they blockaded outside the Democratic City Council-member's booth at the LA Pride event.

O'Farrell didn't show up at the event as originally planned.

I canā€™t say often or enough how fucking racist & wrong local @WiStateJournal political cartoonist @PhilHands is. Itā€™s appalling how he presents the most backwards, harmful takes on critical issues in this city. Iā€™m sure he takes critiques as signs heā€™s being ā€œedgyā€ though. šŸ™„
From the cartoon on the #NoCopsAtPride protests, to the one representing members of Freedom Inc., to the most recent one comparing black queer woman school board member to Trump based on a deliberate misreading of a Facebook post she wrote, there are two consistent themes:
1. The misrepresentation of radical queer and black activists as bullies with equal ability to do harm as those in power.
2. A strong hatred for anyone critiquing or protesting the role of cops and the prison industrial complex in Madison.

Donā€™t celebrate #Stonewall if youā€™re not going to fight for queer & trans ppl of color.
Donā€™t claim OUR history if you donā€™t intend to continue to struggle for freedom & justice for ALL queer & trans folks.
This means supporting sex workers.
This means fighting for disability justice.
This means condemning the prison industrial complex.
This means recognizing cis privilege.
This means no fucking cops & corporations at #Pride.
This means not being content until ALL OF US can live our lives free from racist, sexist, transphobic, homophobic, ableist, classist, xenophobic, anti-Semitic, Islamaphobic violence in a nation that provides the food, housing, education, & healthcare we need to thrive.

Knox County Sherrif Tom Spangler believes that having one of his own officers promote terrorism and genocide against the LGBTQ community is protected under free speech. #ACAB
Knoxville has a deeply misconstrued understanding of ā€œfree speechā€ that historically protects white supremacy and promotes bigotry.
In 2017, TN passed the Campus Free Speech Protection Act which states that colleges cannot shield individuals from free speech, including ideas and opinions that are offensive or radical.

This #PrideMonth please remember that if your Pride event isnā€™t accessible, affordable, & inviting to trans people, non-binary folks & people of color then itā€™s not for the entire LBGTQIA community.
This means wheelchair accessibility. This means ASL interpreters. This means NO COPS. This means gender neutral restrooms. This means hosts who donā€™t make racist, sexist, ableist, transphobic, fatphobic or classist jokes.
Vet your venue. Vet your people. Make Pride great for all of us. Except straight people. Pride isnā€™t for straight people. (I mean, you can come I guess, but Iā€™m not interested in making Pride comfortable for heteros. Donā€™t @ me on this)
