For my own amusement and I hope that of others, I'm starting a month-long thread of U.K. film noir for #Noirvember. Why the U.K.? I've watched a lot of British films since lockdown, so why not. Here, an example of what I won’t include (movies that everyone knows). Image
Some picks may strike you as being more properly designated “noirish” or “not noir at all.” No worries, just know I think they’re good films, and call ‘em whatever the heck you like. (One more that’s too famous for this exercise: IT ALWAYS RAINS ON SUNDAY.) #Noirvember #UKNoir Image
Today, playing catchup with a Lawrence Huntington double feature: WANTED FOR MURDER (1946), script co-written by Emeric Pressburger. Eric Portman stars as a hangman’s grandson whose urge to strangle women keeps...getting...stronger. The carnival scenes alone are worth the watch. Image

Every day last #Noirvember, I tweeted out #noirnovelsbywomen: a total of 30 novels by 30 authors, in alphabetical order by author.

The first tweet in that thread is here <> and a list of all 30 novels is attached. Image
Gonna do something similar this month. This time it will be 30 #vintagenoirnovels, by both men and women authors. For "vintage" my cutoff date for publication is 1965, though I realize that is somewhat arbitrary.

First up: Bill Ballinger's Portrait in Smoke (1950)

Poring over some old files, the young owner of a two-bit collection agency finds a photo of a beauty contest winner and is immediately smitten. Obsessed, he spends years tracking her down. ImageImage

#PreCodeApril Thread.

Feels appropriate to start off with photographer A.L. “Whitey” Schafer’s wonderful Thou Shalt Not image, created in 1941 to satirise the Hays Code restrictions. More background here: ladailymirror.com/2013/11/04/mar… Image
Here’s my @letterboxd list of over 800 #PreCode films (I’m still adding to it). The top 50 are personal favourites / recommendations / Pre-Code must-sees. Also, everything from around 650 onwards is on the Pre-Code Movies YouTube channel. #PreCodeApril letterboxd.com/filmfan1971/li…
A big thank you again to @CookieNScreen and @filmstoriespod for helping me to spread the word about #PreCodeApril with this interview. filmstories.co.uk/news/old-movie…

Some alternative posters for Cry Danger (1951), along with what they used to call a lobby card - there are a few others on the film’s IMDb page too. #Noirvember #CryDanger ImageImageImageImage
Contrast the American posters with these two much racier French and Italian posters, both of which foreground Fleming. #Noirvember ImageImage
This was great fun. Powell plays Rocky (it doesn’t suit him), an ex-con who gets out of jail after serving 5 years for a robbery he didn’t commit and goes after the gangster who framed him. Fleming plays the wife of Powell’s supposed partner in the robbery, who’s still in jail. Image
