I honestly don't understand the "solution" to the #NorthernIreland issue which was caused by the #BrexitDisaster that #RishiSunak seems so excited about.

A short šŸ§µ. Maybe someone can enlighten me.

Apparently the solution is something called the #NorthernIrelandProtocol

(1/8)
Apparently, according to this protocol, there will be a "border at sea." Goods coming from England to Northern Ireland will be marked as those terminating in Northern Ireland or those going on to Ireland (EU checks.)

I don't understand how this will solve the problem. (2/8)
The whole point of the UK coming out of the EU was the implication that the UK will not benefit from the European market rules. That means, for example that French cheese is cheaper for European countries than it is for England.

These are hugely important days for U.K. diplomacy. One might even call it a key moment in the gradual 'great normalisation' of U.K. post-Brexit &post-Covid foreign policy in Europe that started with the Russian attack on #Ukraine . 1/
It was not so very long ago, in 2019, when UK-EU acrimony was at its peak, that the U.K. government (then under @BorisJohnson ) positively shunned the #MunichSecurityConference . Boosterish calls for Global Britain were everywhere, but actual dialogue with allies was not./2
Now, the #MSC2023 is being attended by @RishiSunak @JamesCleverly and @BWallaceMP . Meanwhile a deal on the #NorthernIrelandProtocol may be imminent, and something else *might* be in the air: Lobbying for a šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§candidate to succeed @jensstoltenberg as @NATO Secretary-General?/3

So, weā€™ve had an initial look at the delegated powers in the #NorthernIrelandProtocol Bill. In short, they are quite breathtaking. šŸ§µ #NIProtocol #NIP 1/
We make no comment on the Bill's legal/policy justifications - others are better-placed to do so. But on the scope of the powers & the scrutiny implications for Parliament, the provisions are on a par with - & arguably surpass - the broadest powers we saw in the Brexit bills. 2/
First, every regulation-making power in the Bill is essentially converted into a 'Henry VIII' power by clause 22, which says regulations made under this Act may make any provision that could be made by an Act of Parliament, including provisions modifying this Bill/Act. 3/

EU diplomats growing weary of constant threat from UK.
ā€˜Youā€™d think a minister who has foreign affairs in her brief would understand how bad this is right now.ā€™
ā€˜Thereā€™s a strong consensus that this is only about UK politics and if UK was serious theyā€™d negotiate on the issuesā€™
ā€œNo appetite to reopen the protocol, weā€™ll deal with issues that require resolution but wonā€™t be bullied around. ā€˜Whatā€™s most striking so that weā€™re shoulder to shoulder supporting rules based international order in Ukraine and UK wants to rip it up - itā€™s baffling.ā€
ā€œWe have bigger fish to fry but wonā€™t sit idly by - its very unfortunate we have to spend time ok this.
We donā€™t let it happen but thereā€™s no decision on a responseā€ #NorthernIrelandProtocol

"Yes, Britain is to blame. It chose to leave the EU... In addition, Johnson personally interpreted Brexit as leaving Europeā€™s economic trade area, for which he had no mandate. That decision is costing Britain dear".

"This is his deal. It's his mess. It's his failure. For the first time in his life, it's time to take responsibility"

In September 2020, @Ed_Miliband slammed Boris Johnson for his Brexit deal.

ā€œWith the #NorthernIrelandprotocol, obviously nobody had any idea the actual effects of it until we left the #EU"

Lord @DavidGHFrost isnā€™t happy with the #NorthernIrelandProtocol that HE negotiated. He wants to ā€œreturn to normalā€. Isnā€™t #EU membership ā€œnormalā€? That avoided ALL the problems Frosty is griping about and it's what he supported BEFORE the #EUReferendum. Watch Ā½-minute video.
Before the #EUreferendum, the then Mr @DavidGHFrost strongly supported the case for Britain to REMAIN in the #EU. He said then AGAINST #Brexit: ā€œEven the best-case outcome canā€™t be as good as what we have now.ā€
As for the UK going it alone, @DavidGHFrost said BEFORE the #EUreferendum:

ā€œThe more independent your national trade policy is, the more difficult it is to negotiate completely barrier-free access to any other country.ā€
