#KimJongUn likely has several motivations for his meeting w/ #Trump. First, it’s the grandest of #NorthKorean goals, less a successful nuclear program. The Kim family has long desired that the world treat them as a great power. This meeting helps accomplish that.
It’s also possible that #NorthKoreaTalks are a result of Kim’s fears of a US decapitation strike. He’s losing allies in #China and knows his days could be numbered w/ an unpredictable #Trump. It’s been a risky strategy but it may have paid off.
I’m doubtful sanctions / poor economy pushed #KimJongUn to the negotiating table; #China & #Russia support NK w/ secret and ongoing coal purchases. Kim’s fine w/ letting his people starve. But the ruling class of NK elite may have been pinched by sanctions & grown restless.
