A thread- Labour & the #IrishBorder. Last night @jonsnowC4 interviewed @Keir_Starmer on @Channel4News. Starmer put forward Lab's Customs Union idea as the solution, Snow then picked up this idea & asked him about a Norway deal. 1/
Despite what Starmer implied, a Customs Union on its own would not stop customs checks. It was only when the UK & Ireland joined the Single Market in 1993 that customs checks vanished. Lab oppose being in the Single Market. 2/…
As it is, Norway is in the Single Market. But, as it is not in the EU's Customs Union, there are checks. @Freight_NI points out its one lorry every 35 sec on #IrishBorder at the moment while there's a delay of 10 ins on Norway/Sweden. 3/

With Parliament deadlocked over Brexit, I took a look at the different factions of MPs and did some number-crunching on the @OpenEurope blog.

There may not be a majority for May's deal, but don't write it off yet.

Few key findings (thread) 👇…
1. 🇳🇴➕ #NorwayPlus is often championed as a compromise which could win a majority. Is this true?

I could only find 22 MPs who publicly back it. 15 Conservatives, 5 Labour, and 2 ex-Labour Independents (Frank Field and Ivan Lewis). It's not many people's first choice.
2. Now of course, the argument for #NorwayPlus is that, while it's not many people's first choice, it's a compromise Parliament can unite behind.

I think this argument is shaky.

Sir Ivan Rogers @UCL_EI asserts that we’ve reached point of what he describes as a #BrexitRevolution “When it is essential for both the revolutionaries and the counter revolutionaries to extirpate any compromisers ..a pretty common feature of revolutionary politics #UCLRogers
..(just the UK we’re not used to revolutionary politics) in which polarisation progressively narrows the space for compromise, and indeed compromise (which always early a pretty dirty word in UK politics) becomes a term of abuse..” Sir Ivan Rogers @UCL_EI #UCLRogers continued
“The [Hard Brexit] revolutionaries declare that every Brexit version bar their own is not truly Brexit.”

On 🇪🇺 & 🇬🇧 & 🇳🇴 & 🦄🦄🦄

May 2019 bring much 🎂 to have & eat!

Due thanks @SebDance for inspiration
Some clever 🇬🇧 spin doctors have added a ➕ to 🇳🇴

assumedly to make it more alluring?

@USverdrup, Director at Norwegian Institute of International Affairs @NUPInytt noted to the 🇳🇴 @Aftenposten daily:
“If you stand at the edge
you no longer seek the best solution”
Please consider this:

Did any Central & Eastern European country joining 🇪🇺 2004
1st knock @EFTAsecretariat's door
as their preferred ‘solution’ for #SingleMarket access?

#EFTA & the #EEA Agreement it administers
= a barren 🏜️ for #democracy

A truly grey Brussels #bureaucracy.

As the Brexit debate starts, the amendments come rolling in. This one is potentially significant. Signed by 16 Conservative MPs- including 'usual suspects' such as Grieve/Soubry, but also more surprising names such as Oliver Letwin + Nick Boles. What does it mean? Quick thread 👇
1. The amendment: "the provisions of Standing Order No. 24B" will not apply to any ministerial motion "pursuant to any provision of section 13 of the European Withdrawal Act." Confused? Bear with me, this gets quite technical...
2. S.O. 24B states that votes "in neutral terms" cannot be amended. Votes in neutral terms don't express an opinion ("this House has considered..")

Section 13 of the EU Withdrawal Act provides for several motions in neutral terms, which become amendable if 24B is disapplied.
