Gold has many uses, including in all electronics and in medicine (i.e. treating cancer, pacemakers, surgical equipment...).
But how did #NovaScotia's #gold deposits form?
#nspoli #cbpoli #capebreton @ChenderMLA @AllanMacMaster @HomeMattersCB @TimHoustonNS @LarryHarrisonPC ImageImageImage
All #gold on Earth formed billions of years ago in stars that over-heated and blew up. Gold formed in the heat of the explosions and then floated around space. As rock, dust and other materials came together to form Earth, gold was distributed around the planet.

400 million years ago North Africa and North America started colliding. Sub-sea sediments were squished between the tectonic plates, upthrusted and folded as they turned into rock.

The #CapeBreton quarry was opened in 1933 by the Atlantic Gypsum Mining Company and taken over in 1937 by @NationalGypsum when it bought AGMC. National Gypsum continued to operate the Dingwall quarry until 1955.
#nspoli #cbpoli #novascotia ImageImage
Dingwall produced about 10 million tons of gypsum in its 22 years of operation.
National Gypsum closed the #Dingwall quarry in 1955 because it was opening the world’s largest surface gypsum mine in #Milford, East Hants.

The #Pictou Coalfield's 15 major coal seams in the #Westville, #Stellarton, and #Thorburn-Greenwood areas hosted many mines that created jobs and provided fuel for #NovaScotians.

The first confirmed discovery of #gold in #NovaScotia was made in 1858 at #Mooseland. However, there is reason to believe that gold was found in #NS prior to then - even if in some cases people were unaware of what they had discovered!

Nova Scotia #salt saved lives this winter – all our road salt comes from the #Pugwash salt mine. With snowstorms now over (we hope!), here’s a history of salt mining in #NovaScotia!
#nspoli #cbpoli #capebreton
@MLAElizabethNS @ZannLenore ImageImage
327-342 million years ago, global sea levels rose and fell many times. This repeatedly flooded #NovaScotia with what we call the Windsor Sea. #NS was near the equator at the time so the sea also evaporated repeatedly in the heat.
#nspoli #cbpoli #capebreton Image
The evaporation of sea water left deposits of successive layers of salt. This process was repeated for millions of years until the original salt beds were far below earth’s surface. Subterranean pressures and heat compressed the salt into #NovaScotia’s huge rock #salt deposits. Image

Reclaimed mines are often hidden in plain view! For example, this beautiful lake is the former #Cheticamp #gypsum quarry in Cape Breton. Here’s the history of this amazing site:
#nspoli #cbpoli #novascotia #capebreton #nshistory
@mikekelloway @AllanMacMaster @BAMacQuarrie ImageImageImage
Father P. Fiset, parish priest in #Cheticamp, and his nephew Louis, a doctor, formed the Great Northern Mining Company about 1907. To raise funds, they sold shares for 5 cents each in Cheticamp. Shares were also sold in Quebec where the Fisets were well-known.

In spring 1908 equipment for a mill was delivered to Government Wharf and hauled by horse and cart to Bell-Marche where the mill was built. The first #gypsum rock went through the mill on August 20, 1908.

Staking a claim to something means you have a right to it or it should belong to you. The expression comes from literally driving wooden stakes into the ground to mark a mineral claim: a specific area where someone has the right to explore and mine.
#nspoli #cbpoli #novascotia ImageImage
The expression originated during the California #goldrush which started in 1848 and came to be used figuratively in the late 1800s.
Staking claims in Nova Scotia began in 1862 when @NSLeg passed “An Act relating to the #Gold Fields.”
#nspoli #cbpoli #novascotia Image
The law was in response to the province’s first #goldrush which started in 1861 after the discovery of #gold in Mooseland. It gave the government authority to establish and regulate gold districts.

We love getting questions about #mining, #minerals and #geology! We were asked about historical #gold mining in #Brookfield, #QueensCounty. Check out this thread!

While there were several mines in the #Brookfield #Gold District, almost all the gold produced came from the Brookfield mine operated by Wilbur L. Libbey, which was discovered in 1885.
#nspoli #novascotia #nshistory #cbpoli #capebreton Image
In July 1886, it was acquired by John McGuire and some American associates known as the #Brookfield Milling Company. Under McGuire's management a considerable amount of ore was mined and hauled to #PleasantRiver, #Lunenburg County, for milling.

A rising tide lifts all boats. That’s as true today as it was in the late 1880s when 20 years of #gold #mining in the Whiteburn played a key role in building Northern #QueensCounty.
See this thread for the story.

Gold was discovered in Whiteburn, six miles southwest of #Caledonia, in 1885. A forest fire reportedly ravaged the area and uncovered the gold. Jim McGuire, supposedly hiding out from the tax collector, found it in the barrens near his home and triggered the Whiteburn #gold rush. Image
It’s said that he registered the find in his brother’s name and hid his earnings - $5000 in the first year - in the floorboards of his cousin’s house to throw the authorities off his trail.
By 1887 three mines and mills were operating and mining continued until 1905.

327-342 million years ago, global sea levels rose and fell many times. This repeatedly flooded Nova Scotia with what we call the Windsor Sea. #NovaScotia was near the equator at that time so the sea also evaporated repeatedly in the tropical sun.
#nspoli #cbpoli #capebreton Image
This process gave us huge gypsum deposits because gypsum forms when water high in calcium and sulfate evaporates, leaving the calcium and sulfate behind as sediment. The sediment builds up and is eventually turned into gypsum rock by heat and pressure.

This is the anticline at the #MooseRiver #gold mine. It was formed by the collision of #NorthAmerica and #NorthAfrica 325 million years ago. Layers of horizontal sedimentary rock were crumpled into #anticlines (domes) and #synclines (troughs) - a series of rock waves.
#nspoli #NS ImageImageImage
The #Anticline hosts the Touquoy #gold deposit. Its domes trapped melted, gold-containing rock as it rose from deep in #earth's crust. It flowed into fractures in the rock, creating quartz veins with gold. There are also tiny disseminated particles of gold throughout.
#nspoli #NS ImageImage
The #MooseRiver #gold mine is the first in a series of proposed gold #mines along the #EasternShore. About 300 people work there and the other mines would create 100s more jobs for #NovaScotians.

@Guysboro Water Management: Mine operators are required to treat, strictly monitor and test water, and report to @nsgov. Water is usually recycled on-site. Water released back into a river or lake is usually cleaner after it has been used in a mine or quarry than it was beforehand.

@JimVibert had basic facts wrong in his recent column about #gold #mining.
He said the Touquoy mine is 1,760 hectares and it's bigger than most #NS towns. In fact, it's 249 hectares - less than 1/5 the size of #Burnside ind park.
