1/5 If you are thinking of hosting an event for people outside of your #contactbubble, ask yourself if you, someone in your household, or someone you are inviting may be at high risk of developing complications from #COVID19.

2/5 People at high risk include #olderadults, people of any age with compromised immune systems or chronic medical conditions & people living with obesity. Think twice about attending/hosting a gathering if you/others are at high risk.

3/5 The next best thing hosts can do to reduce risk is to go with safer options, like virtual events or outdoor events. With colder weather, gathering outdoors, while bundled up will reduce #COVID19 risk. Let’s get creative!

1/6 Compared to the initial (spring) peak of #COVID19 in 🇨🇦, young people now account for the majority of cases over many weeks. Of the cases reported last week, those <40 years of age accounted for almost half (46%).
2/6 Among these, 20 to 29 year olds are over-represented, accounting for 25% of #COVID19 cases last week but only 14% of the Canadian population. Cases in 30 to 39 year olds followed, accounting for 21% of recent cases.
3/6 Despite daily cases counts remaining ≤ 500 cases since mid-June, down from the high of ~1,800 daily cases in early May, there is still cause for unease. Most young people will experience milder illness with #COVID19, but not all.

1/5 #COVID19 key concerns in 🇨🇦: Today, in lieu of a daily in-person update to the media, I have issued a Thursday statement you can read in full here: canada.ca/en/public-heal…
2/5 As #publichealth and Canadians continue with collective efforts to limit the spread of #COVID19, we continue to monitor daily case counts, # of hospitalisations and % people testing positive to inform, adjust and adapt our response.
3/5 We are closely monitoring for any increased incidence in #OlderAdults and/or possible increases in hospitalisation or critical care admissions that could indicate a shift in #COVID19 transmission patterns.

2/5 #COVID19 can be severe. Hospitalisation data, available for >81,000 (67%) cases in 🇨🇦 indicates that >11,000 (14%) people developed severe illness requiring hospitalization, with 2,300 (20%) of these people admitted to critical care.
3/5 Data from Canada’s national hospital-based surveillance systems indicate that #COVID19 hospital stays increase with age, with those aged ≥ 60 years remaining in hospital for an average of 16 days.

1/6 Although people of any age can develop #COVID19, some people are at higher risk for hospitalization and death including #OlderAdults and people with chronic medical or immune compromising health conditions.
2/6 In particular, seniors living in long-term care homes have borne the disproportionate impacts & severe outcomes of #COVID19. Prevention & control of COVID-19 in this population is crucial for minimizing morbidity & mortality. #ProtecttheVulnerable
3/6 But, we cannot ignore the direct and indirect impacts that #COVID19 has had on young people. While the number of cases among children and youth has remained low, young people have experienced major disruptions in their lives…

1/4 #Heatwave in ON/QC: ⚠️of health risks posed by extreme heat, esp. for older adults, infants & young children, people w\ chronic illnesses & people who work in the heat, are in low-income households or experiencing homelessness.
2/4 I am very concerned about seniors who have already faced devastating outcomes from #COVID19. Extreme heat can worsen pre-existing conditions & breathing difficulties, esp. as some #OlderAdults may not have access to air conditioning.
3/4 #HelpOthers by checking in on older members of your family & community to make sure they are ok—whether they live in a long-term care home or on their own. Let’s ensure that those most vulnerable to extreme heat get some relief. #heatwave & #COVID19

1/8 Today my remarks focus on the disproportionate impacts and severe outcomes of #COVID19 on seniors. It’s hard to calculate the hardships endured and the grief that remains for those we’ve lost. #OlderAdults
2/8 Prevention & control of #COVID19 in high-risk populations is crucial for controlling this & future pandemic waves. These outbreaks drive up the case fatality rate, accelerate spread, & continue to spillover into the community.
3/8 But it is older adults who bear the brunt of #COVID19. Though an estimated 20% of COVID-19 cases in Canada are linked to long-term care homes, over 80% of all deaths are among seniors residing in these settings. #ProtecttheVulnerable

1/4 #COVID19 key concerns in 🇨🇦: overall growth continues to slow, w\ case counts now doubling only every 16 days (vs. 3-5 day doubling earlier), but outbreaks in high-risk populations continue to drive regional epidemics.
2/4 As well, outbreaks in other shared living & work settings are now driving #COVID19 case counts in some provinces, including shelters, correctional facilities, and work settings with congregate housing for employees.
3/4 Still worrisome, are #COVID19 introductions in vulnerable populations, where outcomes can be most severe, including long term care homes & ↑ activity in indigenous communities, particularly in BC, AB, ON & SK. #ProtectTheVulnerable

1/6 #COVID19 key concerns in 🇨🇦: current epidemiology continues to

2/6 Case counts for confirmed #COVID19 have more than doubled
since #GOC April 9 modelling briefing, which is largely attributable to increased case counts from Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, & Nova Scotia.
3/6 Current driving forces of #COVID19 in 🇨🇦involve outbreaks in long-term care & seniors’ homes & other congregate living/work settings, including shelters, correctional facilities & work site congregate housing.

1/7 #COVID19 key concerns in 🇨🇦: w\ slower epidemic growth, cases are not doubling as rapidly as they had been. However, due to a prolonged clinical course, deaths continue to climb as COVID-19 takes its devastating toll.
2/7 This creates a bit of a paradox: when early in an epidemic there is a rapid #ExponentialGrowth of new cases but a slower accumulation of deaths, so the calculated case fatality rate (CFR) is relatively low. #COVID19
3/7 Then just as things seem to be getting better with the epidemic growth rate slowing down, deaths begin to accumulate at a faster pace and the calculated case fatality rate (CFR) likewise increases. #COVID19
