The 121-day Tokyo Olympics relay kicked off on Mach 25 without spectators. The Tokyo Olympics, which were originally scheduled for July 2020, were delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The relay will end on July 23, 2021, with the Olympic Games opening ceremony in Tokyo.
The rose-gold, cherry blossom-shaped Olympic torch was lit at the J-Village sports complex in Fukushima, which also served as a base for operations responding to the 2011 disaster. Fukushima was one of the worst-affected areas by the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster
The nationwide relay will be different from the previous editions as there will be no spectators amid COVID concerns.
