šŸ§µ confirming who the Directors of the CEC are.

Document from Ministry of Government and Consumer Services lists ALL college presidents, not just a small group, with the exception of @StClairCollegeā€™s Pres. France (not sure what thatā€™s about)

Ontarioā€™s college presidents make great attempts to distance themselves from the CEC and present the CEC as somehow separate from them. We always knew this was dishonest, as the CEC operates on their behalfā€¦

2/17
The truth is that college presidents literally ARE the CEC, essentially working on behalf of themselves under the name of a separate corporation. Very shadowy. Yes.

@jwbrown556, @bedford_darryl, and others have written wonderful, informative pieces about the CEC before.

A šŸ§µ on the CECā€™s illogical position re: arbitrationā€¦

On the one hand, they (on behalf of the colleges) will not agree to voluntary binding interest arbitration because they ā€œcan never acceptā€ any of @CAATfacultyā€™s remaining proposals

#onpse #BargainingforBetter

1/6 Image
On the other hand, they WILL agree to final offer selection arbitration, which could lead to ALL remaining faculty proposals (the same ones they ā€œcan never acceptā€) being in our collective agreement.

2/6 Image
This is a completely illogical position for them to take and reaffirms that this all boils down to trying to flex power, even if it comes at the expense of the faculty and students college leaders claim to care about and respect.

Dear colleagues in #cdnpse #onpse: some thoughts on the decimation of Laurentian University & what it means for the future of #highered. A thread, even with a few bad joke attempts.šŸ’” 1

#FundLU #HumansofLU #SaveLaurentian #OnPoli #cdnpoli
The story: LU filed for creditor protection in Feb, via the Companiesā€™ Creditors Arrangement Actā€”CCAA. Doing it this way bypasses annoying collective agreements.šŸ¤Æ Decisions about massive restructuring are instead made by judges & a court-appointed monitor, here Ernst & Young. 2
The fallout: yesterday 110 faculty members terminated; 60 programs axed, mostly in Arts. But most PSE jobs are staff. The impact on Sudbury and the northern Ontario region is hard to calculate. LU provided essential services & training; it was a foundation of the local economy. 3

Toronto Start Editiorial: "Getting research grants to study wildlife in Algonquin Park, permafrost near Hudson Bay or homelessness in northwestern Ontario canā€™t be easy for professors and graduate students in the first place." #onpse @ocufa @CAUT_ACPPU

"To then find out that those funds have been misappropriated by their university to pay its own bills is a crushing betrayal."
"Laurentian University applied for credit protection last month and staff and students have learned that the university co-mingled research grants with general revenues. And the Sudbury institution was so broke it used that research money to pay salaries and keep the lights on."

Now that President Hache understands the harm that the Insolvency process can do to the community, he should join us in calling on Minister Romano to provide stable, long-term funding to stop this needless and inappropriate insolvency process" (a thread...) #onpse @ocufa #onpoli

Pres. Hache chose to use a process aimed at the private sector. The "CCAA" is a federal law aimed at salvaging profit-making industries. And it's a last-ditch effort that few businesses choose...

In fact, in the corporate sector, it's much more common to do what Air Canada recently did: they were bailed out by the federal government to the tune of a $7 billion loan at 1% (bit.ly/2O4zZCD) ...

So administration at Laurentian University used Tri-Council research funds to pay the bills.

This is happens after decades of systemic underfunding of public education and @fordnation @RossRomanoSSM say it has nothing to do with them.

I have some thoughts. A thread.
Ross Romano @RossRomanoSSM, Minister of Training, Colleges, and University, knew about the financial issues at @LaurentianU MONTHS go. Did not then and is doing nothing now.

FIVE of LUā€™s board members are appointed by the provincial government.

This didnā€™t come out of nowhere.
ā€œBUT DEREK ITā€™S BECAUSE PROFS LIKE YOU MAKE SO MUCH MONEY!!!ā€

Sure, Iā€™ll concede some profs have great, well-paying, secure jobs. But you seem to be missing something here:

Now is not the time for post-secondary educators, researchers, and self-proclaimed 'innovators' to draw grandiose & unwarranted conclusions about the 'future of education'. We simply don't have the data and we cannot know.

1/3
Most post-sec educators continue to be engaged in emergency remote teaching during an ongoing crisis. This cannot provide the basis for an informed, well-founded vision of the future of education, and it is irresponsible to suggest that it can.

2/3
What we can and must do is strive to provide a quality learning experience now, accepting the limitations of the current teaching context while prioritizing the well-being of our students, who we know are struggling in so many ways.

One of the problems (and there are many) with tying post-secondary education funding to the ā€˜needs of the labour marketā€™ is that itā€™s question-begging to invoke labour market ā€˜needsā€™. The labour market isnā€™t some naturally evolving ecosystem:

1/5
Policy & legislative decisions are made that (along with a myriad of other variables), shape the labour market, which determines what training is in demand, which in turn reinforces labour conditions.

2/5
E.g., if a govt passes legislation removing paid sick days & blocking a fair min. wage, favours corporate interests, & makes it more difficult for workers to gain fair representation, this shapes the labour market, making the ā€˜gig economyā€™ & precarious work look inevitable.

Official Opposition leader @AndreaHorwath to Ford: After over a year of doing his utmost to pick a fight with teachers, Ford has fallen silent as parents & students face the first province-wide education strike in 22 years. Will Ford fix the classroom crisis heā€™s created?
@AndreaHorwath Horwath: High school teachers & education workers have been crystal clear about how this can be resolved:
ā€¢ Ford govt reverse reckless classroom cuts
ā€¢ Ford govt reverse plans to increase class sizes and impose Alabama-style mandatory online learning.
@AndreaHorwath Horwath: Teachers are not alone in opposing these cuts.
Parents made it clear they donā€™t want their kids forced into online learning courses.
Students marched out of schools to protest larger class sizes and fewer course options.
Ford has no mandate to make these cuts.

There can be no doubt that the Ontario Government Student Choice Initiative will have a profound impact on campus life & the student experience. The effect will also be felt by surrounding communities of each university and college campus. #fundedbystudentfees #ONpoli #onpse
