The revolving door between journalists & 'think tanks' spins almost as quickly as the one between MPs & lobbyists. #Onward is another right-wing lobbying group in the style of, but not quite as extreme as #Tuftonstreet lobbyists.

Money buys influence. Tories represent the rich. Image
Lesser-known 'Onward' is a UK-based 'think tank' producing research, & founded in 2018 by Will Tanner & one of the less ideologically extreme Tory MPs, Neil O'Brien. It is chaired by Danny Finkelstein - a former chairman of the free-market Policy Exchange.

Things are changing for the better in the US. When we started 7 years ago, we were a lone voice screaming into the void about child/teen transition. Now it’s impossible to keep up with all the orgs & individuals who will no longer stand for the “affirmation only” madness. #Onward
(Actually almost 8 years now). Besides a massive number of detransitioners (seems a new voice every day!), now there are “crossovers” from other battles, a growing number of LGB (& T) warriors angry about the hijacking of their hard-fought movement, & others too many to count.
Will this rising tide give sufficient cover so more physicians & therapists will join their brave colleagues & have the courage to speak out against the extremism that has captured our once-revered institutions? @JuliaMasonMD1 spoke at yesterday’s rally. We need more like her.

#Onward, for which this disturbing & dystopian survey was done, is "a modernising think tank" that believes in "a mainstream conservatism that recognises the value of markets."

But who's behind Onward, who is behind JL Partners, & what does the survey tell us?
JL Partners was "formed after three years running the research programme for 10 Downing St, in the heart of politics. Through a range of quantitative & qualitative methods, we know which questions to ask to get the richness of understanding that you need."
jlpartners.co.uk
With offices in the UK & USA, it operates "on a global scale with research capability in every major region."

The two key players & cofounders of JLP appear to be James Johnson (left) & Tom Lubbock (right), who both worked on polling at Downing Street for then PM, Theresa May. James JohnsonTom Lubbock

A BRUSH WITH DEATH

On this day, 9th January of 2019, my life was changed for good.
The night before I went to bed, struggling with my body, but in my mind I was fatigued following a crazy schedule of 2018 that ended with a Thanksgiving Service for PS Youth, Dr. Owino in Migori
over Christmas followed by the sad loss of CS Tuju's brother and my deep involvement in the burial arrangements which happened on 5th January. I was tired, but apparently also very sick.
morning of the 9th I was determined to take my son to Class One then depart on the 10am
KQ flight for a youth function in Taita Taveta with the Governor and my friend Deputy Governor Majala Mlagui. None of these came to pass.
I collapsed but came to only to find multiple missed calls from my sister Susan who responded to my SOS. I ended up in Aga Khan Hospital,

1/ On the heels of @ASCO #ASCO21 plenary, we are happy to share the results of KEYNOTE-564 trial of adjuvant pembrolizumab in mRCC just published in @NEJM ! A step towards better outcomes for all our patients with kidney cancer!

2/ Following nephrectomy for kidney cancer, a significant percentage of patients will experience disease recurrence, most of them with distant metastases, highlighting the need for effective adjuvant therapies.
3/ Despite many decades of research and clinical investigations, there are currently no globally approved adjuvant regimens for the management of #kidneycancer

My companies pre-Covid operated at ~$1.5m/month at 20% margins.

Post-Covid they are running a cool ~$6.5m/month at 40% margins.

Three strategic changes stand out as I reflect this morning >>>
(1) HEDGE

Big investors do this on instinct... if a stock goes down, they need another stock to rise in equal proportion to protect (or 'hedge') the downside.

We started thinking this way, "What if everything breaks, how would we fix?" Then we fixed those things proactively.
(2) HIRE

Some of the best times for you to grow is when everyone else is retreating. When ppl are running AWAY, you create opportunity by running forward.

Zig VS Zag... as a heuristic, inverse the mainstream logic and you will win.

I talked about Amari Cooper on the podcast this week, but thought it would be fun to cover it here too.

Let me preface by saying Amari Cooper is one of the best 15 prospects we've seen in the past 20 years

But he hasnt exactly lived up to that billing

Commence Diving.
I put up this poll the other day and 49.2% of y'all think he's going to be a WR1 or better in 2021.
And I have to assume it is because of this torrid stretch to begin the season.

Through the first four weeks Amari Cooper was THE WR1 overall...

Dak Prescott just so happened to get injured in game 5 and Amari's season went off the rails thereafter.

Tether & @Bitfinex have reached a settlement with @NewYorkStateAG. After 2.5 years and 2.5M pages of info shared, we admit to no wrongdoing and will pay US$18.5M to resolve this matter. 1/3
No finding that Tether ever issued without backing or to impact crypto prices. This settlement shows our commitment to the future of the industry, and to transparency with quarterly disclosures of @tether_to reserves going forward. 2/3
We are pleased to put this behind us. Full statement available below. #onward

Who lives?
Who dies?
Who tells your story?

You would have been 100 years old yesterday. And, from what I hear, if it were up to you that day would have involved teaching and patient care.

And family, too.

Yup.
2/
I met you before you departed. Stood by as you taught EKG vectors feeling relieved that you weren’t calling on junior faculty.

Whew!

When it came to teaching, you were, as we used to say around my way, “‘bout that life.”

Yeah. That.

‘Bout that LIFE.

But back to those questions from #Hamilton—who lives? Who dies? Who dies? Who tells your story?

I know—you’re like, “What is #Hamilton? But stay with me, sir.

I think it’s a question about legacy and impact. I think that’s why it’s my favorite song in that whole show.

Yup.

Let's be clear: voters lack of climate urgency is not the fault of the climate movement. Ultimately the fault lies with our education system and the news media.

According to @EndClimtSilence polling, the majority of Americans learn about #ClimateChange from the news.

1/n Image
And we know that the vast majority of the news media, broadcast news media in particular, never even mentions climate change—and when they do they fail to convey the urgency of the problem or the scope and timing of the solutions.

2/n
The fact that American voters haven't put #ClimateChange in the top three of their list for voting is due to the news media failing to tell the climate story. It speaks all the more to the need to force them to #EndClimateSilence.

It was 2013. I was a 1st yr lawyer in DC, a world away from Ranier, MN pop: 199. I couldn’t believe the racist BS in the streets & the racist BS on Capitol Hill: it was like Natives didn’t exist. “Redskins” played in a stadium next to a Congress where paternalism still reigns.
Social media connected me to other Natives pushing for a new narrative & a movement of Native peoples who had tirelessly fought such obvious racism since the 1960s.
I met powerhouse advocates like @blackhorse_a, Suzan Harjo, @CharleneTeters, @NCARSM, @NativeCurator, @SimonMoyaSmith & started learning how to organize from badasses like Norma Renville, @LonnaKayHunter, @WeLiveNative, @johnniejae, & so many more.

We continue to navigate a world that is unwell and a nation that refuses to be accountable to the terror it inflicts on folks who are IBPOC (Indigenous, Black, and People of Color).

Given the way the last month unraveled, I was compelled to adjust the summer reader I was creating for my faculty and instead create a workbook that not only provided an opportunity for reflection & visualizing for the future but also steeped us, collectively, in anti-racism. 2/ The quote at the top reads,
And so the Summer WORKbook for Educators was born. FREE download (link in bio). This self-paced WORKbook is intended to take you through the summer and is structured using the habits and dispositions of #Onward by Elena Aguilar. 3/ The quote at the top reads,

Due to the rapidly evolving situation, I'm sorry to say that there will be no new #Charting episode this week. There's no shame in playing it safe. BUT - did you think I wasn't gonna make charts anyway? Let's do this in 280 characters or less! (THREAD)
#Onward tops the box office, despite barely eking out a $10 million weekend gross. #Bloodshot debuts in second place, but #IStillBelieve & its $12 million budget may be the real winners here. Ironically, after being pushed due to controversy, #TheHunt was barely noticed.
Just how bad was this weekend? Here's the gross for the second weekend in March for the last 10 years. COVID-19's first significant effects on the North American market are crystal clear. The bad news? This is just the beginning, as most theaters that were open are now closed.
