Now It Can Be Said, Masking Edition:

“From a broad public-health standpoint, at the population level, masks work at the margins — maybe 10 percent.”

– Anthony Fauci

This is potentially the biggest bombshell from today’s @dwallacewells interview.

When you think about the amount of vitriol that has been spewed over US debates about masking, this is an astounding comment.

Said casually. Almost as an aside. Image
If you’ve followed me long enough, you know I spent the first ~12-14 months of pandemic advocating for masking, incl. in schools, because of early messages & surely also “that was what the good people did” in-group think.

No parent should be jailed for choosing a school that meets the needs of their kids.

When I was in HS, I too lied about where my parents lived to attend school - that was before AZ had open enrollment & #SchoolChoice

That’s why I’m an advocate for families like these 👇🏼
For context, I did not live with my parents in HS, but state law req’d me to attend the school in their district, which was on the other side of town. If I didn’t lie, I had no way to get to school and would instead have ended up a HS dropout.
Many kids in my circumstances would have chosen the path of least resistance and dropped out. But I had bigger plans for my future. Not all kids have that kind of drive.

Frankel’s reporting only shows 1 of 27 parents adopting an anti-vaccine position.

So why is @sheeraf allowed to conflate anti-mandate positions with anti-vaxx positions?

👉They are different.

That’s just the start of the issues w this column.

Cc: @puiwingtam @ellenjpollock1
.@sheeraf’s sources are speaking out to make clear that they are not anti-vaccine.

👇

This raises serious questions about the integrity of this reporting.
I’m particularly dismayed by this:

“They shared notes & online articles — many of them misleading — about the reopening of schools and the efficacy of vaccines & masks.”

RE misleading articles, @sheeraf links to article from Mar. ‘20.

So this 👇 actually happened, and we should all pay very close attention: a rational, free-thinking local mom was fired from her job merely because she dared advocate for #OpenSchools in Fall of 2020. This is nuts.

In Dec '20 suburban mom Elena Dinverno was fired as marketing director at Blake's Hard Cider @blakeshardcider in Armada, MI after school board president Kristin Bull contacted her boss, and demanded Elena be fired for her #OpenSchools advocacy.

School board president Kristin Bull is also director of content at Crain’s Detroit Business. Dinverno said Bull threatened to revoke a ‘40 Under 40’ recognition for Andrew Blake, president of Blake’s Hard Cider, in retaliation for Dinverno’s #OpenSchools advocacy on Facebook.

A lot of “experts” pushed to close schools despite early & consistent evidence that schools & kids were safe.

And now, as if on queue, many of these bluechecks trying desperately to “PIVOT” and pretend they didn't.

So, let's talk about this dude : @ashishkjha

In July 2020 Jha loudly and repeatedly demanded districts tie school openings to the amorphous notion of "community spread".

2/9

thehill.com/changing-ameri…
Tying #OpenSchools to "community spread" was not only counter to all available data and evidence, it literally *ensured* schools would remain closed. And millions of kids were forced into damaging remote/hybrid schemes.

Jha would not be at Harvard long after he wrote this.

Then, in November 2020, after the damage being done to our kids was crystal clear, Jha tried his first "adjustment" : tying school openings to unachievable thresholds of physical "safety" in classrooms.

The unattainable pipe dream that we are still dealing with today.

COVID and kids. What the data says.

🧵

Childhood rates of hospitalization have remained low.
Children are at greater risk of death from car accidents, drowning, and pneumonia than COVID.
Data from the UK’s 2nd vs 3rd wave. You can see that infections and deaths have largely decoupled since vaccination.

1/ WA Alliance 4 Kids calls itself a 'parent advocacy group' but really it's just another GOP campaign. WAA4K is incorporated with the state, and the primary officer is Don Skillman who was the campaign manager for the anti ST3 campaign.

His wife Moya is WAA4K's spokesperson ImageImageImage
2/ WA Alliance 4 Kids began pushing for a full time re open in the fall when most of the public wasn't vaccinated, #covid19 was still surging and safety precautions weren't in place.
3/ WA Alliance 4 kids and the #OpenSchools movement has spread rumors, attacked teachers, and advocated for voting no on school levies/bonds out of retaliation.

The goal is to exploit parent's frustration about school closures to gain support for defunding public ed.

All schools should open now with no distancing restrictions & no masks. The @CDCDirector distancing guidance is what is keeping most schools closed, so let's make a thread of happy healthy children who are currently in school getting an in-person education.
More happy healthy student athletes who are allowed in schools!
Why are schools still virtual/hybrid? These children are doing amazing?

Parents are getting used to the shaming from elected leaders: Kudos to these Lexington parents for speaking up when *elected* School Comm member @kathleenlenihan publicly mocks them.

This is why we applaud 👏 @MASchoolsK12 disrupting local control

#openschools @schools_us
This, folks, is what us parents are getting used to dealing with from @MASCSchoolComm elected leaders ‼️

Simply because we are vocalizing that our children need to be prioritized and that any semblance of routine and in-person schooling is sorely needed. Shameful! #openschools

At @MASchoolsK12 mtg: Commissioner @JeffreyCRiley discusses a provisionally accepted study by interdisciplinary group of doctors in a top infectious disease journal: "The effectiveness of 3- vs. 6-feet of distancing for controlling the spread of covid-19 among students and staff"
The study compared 194 MA districts operating at 6 feet with 49 MA districts at 3-feet from Sept to January, with all other mitigation in place, concludes: "there was not a higher case rate of COVID-19 in either students OR staff based on the difference in spacing." #openschools

Infrequently discussed long term effects of closed schools:

* Public opinion in blue areas turning against teacher's unions;

* Public sentiment increasingly viewing unions as a big money special interest group;
* School boards filled with people who are anti-union, pro-school choice;

* States defunding public ed as they pass laws that "fund students, not systems;"

* Public ed defunding itself as there's a massive shift of people out of public ed into charters and private schools.
Oh and let's not forget:

* Ds losing any gains they may have made with suburban white women in 2018 & 2020.

Advocates for #openschools were exactly 0% surprised by the Oakley School Board incident.

Honestly, their hot mic comments were tame compared to the barbs lobbed #onhere.... by teachers.
Parents are accused of not caring of teachers die... when in fact, we have simply read @CDCgov studies like this one: cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/7…...

Of being sick of their kids...

Parents who talk about kids w/ mental health issues are told that better parenting would address it...
And of course my favorite, that they want to kill their own kids.

This gem is from a SLP.

Tennessee Mortality Data:

tennesseestands.org/coviddashboard…

Per the CDC, Tennessee is on track to see about a 10-12% increase year-over-year in total mortality from all causes

1/
In a recent survey, Americans responded that the mortality burden of Covid was 225 times higher than it actually was. Between 1500 to 1650 Tennesseans pass away every week. While all loss of life is tragic, it is important to keep this in perspective.

Public Health should be focused on minimizing all harms to human life. The response of our politicians and Public Health authorities have exacerbated an opioid crisis and cause undue stress and fear among many.

Hospital Capacity:

Most of the media coverage on hospitals has been focused on beds. Beds are not the resource limitation, clinicians are. And beds are used as the best proxy for hospital capacity. Typical utilization rates depend on the hospital but vary between 65% and 90%

1/
In April, Vanderbilt created a predictive model to advise the State on what restrictions and NPI’s such as social distancing (notice that masks were not an input into the model) to implement in order to avert certain disaster, without which we would see 50,000 hospitalizations
2/
Take a look at the Vanderbilt projections and then compare them with the actual Hospitalizations in the Visual. Clearly, there was a time when we believed we needed to “flatten the curve” and participate in these measures to save lives.
