Minneapolis has mainstreamed terrorism.

Congratulations 🙄

This was Sunday at #OpenStreets

Over $500 million in damage and loss to businesses owned and operated by people of color because of what these terrorists are promoting, and this is mainstreamed at @OpenStreetsMPLS @OpenStreets.

How repulsive.

When you do a lengthy thread replete w/ stories on how/where gang issues fit into the safe/open/slow streets discussion and someone immediately tells you there's no need to read it because the real problem is cars, did you really happen
For those that didn't see the #carsplaining in response to a question raised in the thread. It was real and it was not spectacular. ImageImageImage
I've been writing for a transportation outlet for the past 8.5 years. I promise you I've heard about cars before. But all those years in this field have taught me that it doesn't know much about the other barriers to accessing the public space (& which also push people to drive).

My god what is this explicit effort to deracialize racial profiling, @StreetsblogUSA? Pedestrians are not being overpoliced during COVID-19. Police are using COVID-19 as yet another excuse to harass folks of color, particularly Black people.

I literally feel sick to be attached to the national Streetsblog network lately. But I'm going to try to push the bile back down and explain why this is so insidious - how it perpetuates structural harms and centers whiteness in planning in the guise of allyship.
First, framing policing as something that inconveniences and hinders *all* peds, and, on occasion, PoC peds in slightly more annoying ways, is a form of #AllLivesMatter. Image

I wrote this 5yrs ago, but it seems worth revisiting now, as #openstreets advocates continue to speak over those who raise questions about who gets left behind when the needs of those who can't access their streets in the best of times are left out of the conversation.
It's so weird to reread my own words and recognize that a (very tiny) part of me clung to the hope that if I could just lay this out in a way advocates of privilege could understand, they would get it and at some point, we might see a shift in the conversation.
I'd mark any hope I had as officially being buried in early 2017, when I watched L.A.'s bike community rally itself to explain away the racist & otherwise bigoted shenanigans of one of its leaders who was running for city council. But in truth it was dead well before then.

UPDATE: Minneapolis added an additional 11 miles of Stay Healthy Streets on local streets, expanding geographic equity + complementing #openstreets along 21 miles of parkway. This includes a "super loop" linking St. Paul and MPLS on both sides of the Mississippi. #Covid19Streets ImageImage
Beyond these 32 miles, sidewalk space has been expanded in front of essential services, 400+ pedestrian signals are on recall, and 20mph speed limits are being implemented citywide. In short, no other US city has taken as comprehensive a #Covid19Streets approach as Minneapolis.
With leadership from @rchonthego, many of these #Covid19Streets measures could be kept post-pandemic, as they are informed by the city's transportation action plan. Again, the opportunity for cities now is to implement safer streets in weeks/months rather than years/decades.

At 80 officers for 1.5 miles, I can't overstate how over-policed NYCs #OpenStreets were. At that ratio, 18 miles in Minneapolis requires more police than are employed in their entire 800-person dept. Denver's 10 miles would require 35% of its 1500+ force! nyc.streetsblog.org/2020/04/06/may…
So @NYCMayor cancelled the 11-day old pilot program because it was not a good use of resources. No kidding! This would be the case during the best of times, but certainly it was a poor choice during a global pandemic.
Sorry, make that 46% of Denver's PD... the city currently has 13.3 miles (not 10) of #openstreets on city streets and within its park system. I'm not in Denver, but I assume they aren't expending 1/10th of that resource.
