At 5 & 6 @LocalMemphis, I'll recap Attorney General Bill Barr's visit in Memphis this afternoon, where he'll update with @MEM_PoliceDept recent results of #OperationLegend , an initiative launched in the Bluff City in August.
.@TheJusticeDept operation launched in Kansas City in July and later expanded to Memphis & other cities. It brings in temporary and permanent federal investigators to complement the Multi-Agency Gang Unit. Dozens of arrests announced by DOJ to date linked to Operation Legend.
The federal operation isn't without local detractors. The faith group MICAH in mid-August argued instead of more "federal interference", priority should be funding non-police first responders, like mental health specialists and community interventionists.
Six weeks into #OperationLegend DOJ has arrested 2,000+ people but has only filed charges in 476 cases.
In other words, they are "declining" to file federal charges in the vast majority of cases (76%).
FYI: That's more than triple the normal federal declination rate for 2019.

#OperationLegend has resulted in 43 defendants charged with federal crimes in Kansas City, Missouri.
The uprising in defense of Black lives represents the largest social movement in U.S. history. As more people say #BlackLivesMatter, local and federal law enforcement are harassing, arresting, and charging activists and organizers with made-up charges.

Police all over the country have tear-gassed, dragged, beaten, run over, & arrested over 10,000 protestors for defending Black lives. Amnesty International recorded 125 incidents of police violence against protestors from May - June 2020 in 40 states.

It sounds like the Mayor was bitching about #OperationLegend, which is an op to reduce crime in violent cities.

It’s Monday morning and I’m exhausted. I spent majority of the weekend locating, bailing out, and talking to protesters, and now that I’ve had a few hours to recharge I’d like to share my/their experiences as well as my concerns re the FEDERAL OCCUPATION OF KANSAS CITY.
Multiple protesters we bailed out reported that after being maced by police they tried to escape. They were blocked by an unmarked truck and immediately rounded up, thrown into a paddy wagon, and taken into custody.
Once in custody, officers confiscated protester’s masks/face coverings and did not provide new masks. They were interrogated for hours by a cop who wanted to know “which one of you fuckfaces spray painted our statue?”. They were denied food/any information re their charges.
