When we hear the word "Slavery" the first thing that comes to our mind is slavery back in the days of our forefathers and before our countries achieved independence.

Slavery, however, didn't end with those times. It's still practised in modern forms and styles.

Although modern slavery isn't defined in law, it is hidden under different forms like:

1. Forced & early marriage
2. Forced labour
3. Human trafficking
4. Debt bondage
5. Slavery of children

These are some of the major forms of slavery practised worldwide.

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and women in Turkey have been on the frontlines to fight for their hard-earned rights when it comes to protection against violence this year. #IDEVAW

Murders of women have increased by 1,400 percent between 2002 and 2009 in Turkey, and recent years have seen an average of 400 femicides a year.

According to the WHO, 38% of women in Turkey are subject to domestic violence. #OrangeTheWorld

Instead of advocating for women’s rights, Turkey’s President Erdoğan decided to withdraw from the ‘Istanbul Convention’ last July, which was the first legally binding instrument that “creates a comprehensive legal framework and approach to combat violence against women.”

The Kafala system in the Gulf means that employers pretty much “own” their female domestic workers.

Verbal abuse, physical abuse and rape are rife. When the female workers fight back, they are sentenced to death for murder.

'China renamed Rosa – From childhood sold five times'

The life of China, called by at least three names and sold five times, illustrates how impossible it was for a slave to hold onto even the most basic unit of identity. China of Singaracolla was sold into slavery as a child.

Six years later, ‘China, renamed Rosa’ was sold for 18 pagados, to a VOC sailor, Hendrik Hillman. A month after this, now recorded as ‘Rosa’, she was sold at a 100 percent profit to a Dutch ship’s captain, Cornelius Bosch.

He set sail five months later on the Bovenkerker Polder bound for Cape Town and took her with him.
The final record of sale was in 1775, when China was 16 or 17; she was bought by the most senior clergyman of the Cape, Johannes Serrurier.

It is because of these images of journalists sticking their mics in front of a victim battered DAYS AGO, who is still under 6weeks of a Ceaserean section. She needs a hospital, not a presser.
Her attacker appears unchallenged.

In the first place, as journalists, we owe it to this society, that even when the law fails, even when a governor and his wife endorse domestic violence by seeking reconciliation rather than medical and legal assessment - we owe it to victims to prioritise THEM, not their pain.

I'm disturbed that these images suggest:
No journalist reminded everybody that we are in the middle of #OrangeTheWorld globally. No journalist felt the need to reconsider this public, group-interviewing of a woman with scars still bright red on her face.
Clickbait kills empathy.
