French travellers in the 19th c. were often disappointed by the coffeehouses they encountered in North Africa. They expected the Orientalist fantasies they had grown accustomed to (in paintings & novels) & were shocked when the reality differed from that. #HistoryOfCoffee [1/4]
Jules Leclercq described them in an 1881 account about his journey through Morocco & Algeria as nothing but "dirty huts", adding that the "cafés of Tangier have nothing that corresponds with the brilliant [preconceived] ideas that we have of Oriental cafés" #Orientalism [2/4]
Showing his general prejudice towards North Africans, Leclercq admitted that "it was not without repugnance that I accepted the poorly cleaned cup", adding that this "black brew, thick, steaming [...] inspired little confidence in me". #FrenchColonialism #HistoryOfCoffee [3/4]

In March 2020, the German Ministry of the Interior @BMI_Bund issued a #strategypaper that weaponized fear in order to accomplish compliance with #COVID policies. The authors' emails were litigated under #FOIA request. My analysis. #MEGATHREAD ⬇️ Image
2/210: The @BMI_Bund emails have been released to the public as they were successfully sued by lawyer Niko Härting in a FOIA proceeding. They can be requested directly from @BMI_Bund/ @rki_de via @fragdenstaat. Download it here: bit.ly/3knoa6Y bit.ly/3Bd0rgj Image
3/210: The emails originated March 19-25, 2020. They are so explosive because they map the inner discourse of the @BMI_Bund's now infamous #COVID-19 taskforce, which produced several crucial domestic policy documents. bit.ly/2TT3R7O @OttoKolbl

One of the more unexpected elements of Restating Orientalism of #WaelHallaq was finding him use perhaps the most important 'traditionalist' of the 20th C René Guénon (later ʿAbd al-Wāḥid Yaḥyā, 1886-1951) to critique #Said cup.columbia.edu/book/restating… 1/ ImageImageImageImage
#Hallaq account is classic decolonizing use of elements of #Orientalism against the overarching apparatus and discourse 2/
I first came across #Guénon as a fresher reading the works of Seyyed Hossein Nasr (b. 1933) - and read his La Grande triade and later Fundamental Symbols (reprinted in a series of his by Philosophia Perennis, a traditionalist publisher based in Cambridge) #Traditionalism 3/ ImageImage
