My paper with Stuart Bartlett on "Provenance of Life" is finally out in @PhysRevE ! We simulated a simple chemical system, and showed its ability to learn by association, and use this defend itself against a threat.
A thread🧵#astrobiology #OriginOfLife
doi.org/10.1103/PhysRe…
It all started when Stuart and Michael Wong @miquai proposed a new broader definition for "life". They wanted to cover not only life as we know it on Earth but also "as it could be elsewhere in the Universe". They called this new concept "LYFE".
doi.org/10.3390/life10…
Their definition is based on 4 pillars :
* Dissipation
* Auto-catalysis
* Homeostasis
* Learning.
The first three pillars imply that to be considered « alive », a system should be able to dissipate free energy, self-replicate, and maintain its internal balance.

First, let's divide human history into three eras, or regimes of #knowledge #production and #consumption:

• #premodern/#archaic
• #modern + #postmodern
• the #egregore (online content sharing)

• The premodern era is defined by caloric restriction.
• The modern era is characterized by a small number of sellers of #information vs. a large number of consumers (see also #HerbertSimon's remarks on the "poverty of #attention")

#OriginofLife or #Abiogenesis 🔥🔥🔥

1/ Life is the condition that distinguishes plants & animals (including humans) from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity & continual change preceding death.
2/ Life functions thru th specialized chemistry of carbon & water & builds largely upon four key families of chemicals:
i) lipids (fatty cell walls),
ii) carbohydrates (sugars, cellulose),
iii) amino acids (protein metabolism), &
iv) nucleic acids (self-replicating DNA&RNA).
3/ #Abiogenesis is the natural process by which life & living systems arose from non-living elements, such as simple organic compounds.
