As much as I've griped about the Oscars, I've always enjoyed following them. I gripe because I'm a fan. They're my Super Bowl. My family owned a video store when I was growing up. I've earned two whole degrees in film studies from actual academic institutions. I love movies.
In the past, I've joined in the criticism of Oscars' lack of diversity (shout out to @ReignOfApril/#OscarsSoWhite), but I've never been disappointed by the lack of Asian American nominees. You can't be disappointed when you were never in the running. That's why today is special.
Among the historic firsts, we have #Minari, an American film performed mostly in Korean, nominated for Best Picture, with acting nominations for Steven Yeun, an Asian American actor of my generation and Youn Yuh-jung, a legendary Korean actress of my parents' generation.

1. #MartinScorsese is nominated for #TheIrishman, a complex, reflective, autumnal, essential film. In more than 50 years of making movies, Scorsese has been awarded one statuette for directing, earned for #TheDeparted. bit.ly/pgratedblog #Oscars2020 #OscarNoms
2. You also could argue with the Academy voters over “Mean Streets,” for which Scorsese wasn’t even nominated. #Oscars2020 #OscarNoms #MeanStreets #Scorsese
3. But, rather focus on the regrettable, toast the artist with a cocktail that’s appropriately powerful and splashed with red: Two ounces very chilled vodka, one ounce of Campari, a splash of cherry liqueur (optional), one half-ounce grapefruit juice, stirring all.

Some #OscarNoms thoughts that are sure to change over the next few weeks. A thread.

General thought 1: I LOVE awards season. Telling stories well is a key component to cultural change. Honoring people is a blast. Sure, it's silly to compare art, but it's a valuable exercise.
General thought 2: Awards also allow for a secondary incentive to invest in unique and different films, aside from $$$$. It's one of the primary reasons we get more than just the latest Disney crowd pleaser.
General Thought 3: The Academy continues to struggle with diversity. More on that to come. But, there is going to be a long, painful evolution to fight those built in systematic biases.

Since @WarnerBros is profiting from fictional films w/ gun violence, it should do everything in its power to make it harder for people to carry out violence in the real world

@WarnerBros must end political donations to @NRA backed candidates
@jokermovie @warnerbros @NRA In September, we launched a campaign arguing that during a period of federal inaction, @WarnerBros has a responsibility to keep its audiences safe from gun violence.

This came as authorities were warning the public about potential acts of gun violence at @jokermovie screenings
@jokermovie @warnerbros @NRA .@jokermovie was coming out all over the world, but only in US were we seeing threats of gun violence

Why? Because only in US are guns so readily available and easy to get.

@WarnerBros responded to a letter from @MamaRedfield outlining its responsibility to act by agreeing...
