Among the #Ottoman sultans, #Abdülhamid used the title of #caliph the most. He encouraged Islamic Identity, telling Muslims living under European powers to unite into one polity. He attempted to expand Islam by sending religious teachers as far away as South Africa and Japan. 
Sultan emphasized the Empire's "Islamic" character, reasserted his status as the Caliph, and called for #MuslimUnity behind the Caliphate. He succeeded briefly in reasserting Islamic power. This threatened several European Colonial Powers Like Austria, Russia, France, & Britain.
Latest @DefenceHQ update: #Ukraine's "offensive operations" around #Russian-occupied Kherson advance "on a broad front". The operation has "limited immediate objectives", but exploits Russia's weaknesses, and forces Moscow into a choice over deployment of its stretched forces.

On this day (June 26th 1579), following the footsteps of his ancestors, #Mughal Emperor Akbar, personally recited the Friday khutbah (religious sermon).

(2/11) The Arab invasion of #Iran led to a cotton boom – until the 11th century. Then a “big chill” made agriculture detract. Leading Sunni scholars moved elsewhere &bimportant madrasas closed. This helped to eventually convert Iran into Shi’i-majority lands in the 16th century.
(3/11) The “golden age” of the Ottoman Empire saw the conquest of Egypt. With grain (incl. rats/fleas) now being shipped in huge quantities from Alexandria to #Istanbul, the capital became a constant “plague hub” (which, in turn, dramatically increased Ottoman medical knowledge).
2) The the name "Nakhichevan" in #Armenian literally means "the place of first descent", a Biblical reference to the descent of Noah's Ark on the adjacent Mount #Ararat. Armenian tradition says that Nakhichevan was founded by Noah.
3) The region was at the center of the ancient Kingdom of #Armenia (858 BC-428 CE). During the invasion by Sassanid #Persian Shah Shapur II (r. 309-379) he removed 2,000 Armenian and 16,000 #Jewish families from #Nakhichevan (360-370 CE).
It's my last day before two weeks off, so yay! To celebrate, here's something for the #calligraphy nerds out there. Or 14157 is Silsile-i Hattatin, an #Ottoman #Turkish genealogy of calligraphers in Muslim-majority West Asia.
We know that this work was created in the late 19th century because it presents a narrative of calligraphic practice that runs from the Prophet İsmail down to Ali Namık, who died in 1283 AH (1866-67 CE).
The text is complete with various anecdotes about the history of #calligraphy and the biographies of various calligraphers. My favourite part about the manuscript is the way that the author organizes the data and uses the pages, making the most of the flow of the text.

Inside is a piece by the newspaper’s editor, Ahmed İhsan. He loved the atmosphere and meaning of Ramadan, so he decided to write a reflection on the holy month in his newspaper. I’ll let him tell his own (slightly edited for space) story:
