Turkey's leaders are taking a break from enabling #Russia against #NATO and ethnic cleansing Syria’s #Kurds to launch absurd claims and empty threats against Greek islands. We take a look at the painful history of Turkish rule on one of them: a thread on #Chios from #theHELC 1/10
The history of the Greeks in Chios goes back more than 3,000 years reaching to #Minoan and #Mycenaean times. Chios is the most likely birthplace of #Homer and had its own coins and democratic parliament by 600 BC. Its famous wine was exported from the Black Sea to #Egypt 2/10
The islanders sided with Athens and then #Alexander the Great against Persia and continued to prosper under first the #Roman and then the Eastern Roman (#Byzantine) Empire. The famous #mosaics of Nea Moni monastery are considered a masterpiece of Byzantine art 3/10

Now Out in Paperback! “#China Goes to #Sea: #Maritime Transformation in Comparative Historical Perspective”

amazon.com/China-Goes-Sea…

@NavalWarCollege @ChinaMaritime is proud to publish this new version w/ @NavalInstitute @USNIBooks!

Come for the #maps, stay for the #history...
Honored to have #JonathanSpence’s endorsement:

“The maritime #history of #China has long been a neglected field..China Goes to Sea bring[s] that knowledge-gap to an end..will be an indispensable companion to those readers seeking to understand where China’s navy may be heading.”
As European #naval powers & even the @USNavy struggle with ship numbers, #China has gone to #sea.

Represents the reversal of a great historical trend that began 600 years ago, when China withdrew from the seas & European naval expansion spread Western influence around the globe.

On this day (June 26th 1579), following the footsteps of his ancestors, #Mughal Emperor Akbar, personally recited the Friday khutbah (religious sermon).

#Akbar declared himself as "Padishah i Islam", much like his Timurid ancestors Shah Rukh Mirza & Ulugh Beg Mirza.
This was by no means surprising, for the Timurid's followed the notion of sacred kingship, that is, the monarchs reign was bestowed by God, that the monarch was the shadow of God on earth (zil-i-ilahi), & a guide of God's creation. Moreover, Emperor #Humayun in a dispatch to
#Ottoman Sultan, stressed that whilst he (Suleiman) was the Caliph across his domains, the Timurid-Mughals were the rightful Caliphs of Hind & Sindh & no other external entity has the right to such a claim.

What Akbar issued was no different to what his ancestors had practiced

Modern history represents how the #Secularist & #Capitalist #Europe was established while Islam & #IslamicCivilization was grounded to a halt .
After centuries of painful experiences Europe finally realized that it would establish itself on the stage of history unless it shattered the world-guiding global siege of Islamic civilization .

@batuhangcr your thread is nothing more than a lie.

This is the fact on record that #OttomanEmpire did a brutal genocide of #armenians.

It is the moral & ethical responsibility of #Turkey to accept their bloody deeds & apologise for #ArmenianGenocide ImageImageImageImage
The western portion of Historical #Armenia, known as Western Armenia had come under #Ottoman Empire by the Peace of Amasya (1555) and was permanently divided from Eastern #Armenia by the Treaty of Zuhab (1639). Image
B/W 1894-1896, in response to the large scale protests by Armenians, Turkish military officials, soldiers & ordinary men sacked Armenian villages and cities and massacred their citizens.

(2/11) The Arab invasion of #Iran led to a cotton boom – until the 11th century. Then a “big chill” made agriculture detract. Leading Sunni scholars moved elsewhere &bimportant madrasas closed. This helped to eventually convert Iran into Shi’i-majority lands in the 16th century.
(3/11) The “golden age” of the Ottoman Empire saw the conquest of Egypt. With grain (incl. rats/fleas) now being shipped in huge quantities from Alexandria to #Istanbul, the capital became a constant “plague hub” (which, in turn, dramatically increased Ottoman medical knowledge).

It's my last day before two weeks off, so yay! To celebrate, here's something for the #calligraphy nerds out there. Or 14157 is Silsile-i Hattatin, an #Ottoman #Turkish genealogy of calligraphers in Muslim-majority West Asia. ImageImageImageImage
We know that this work was created in the late 19th century because it presents a narrative of calligraphic practice that runs from the Prophet İsmail down to Ali Namık, who died in 1283 AH (1866-67 CE). ImageImageImageImage
The text is complete with various anecdotes about the history of #calligraphy and the biographies of various calligraphers. My favourite part about the manuscript is the way that the author organizes the data and uses the pages, making the most of the flow of the text. ImageImageImageImage

Let's start a #Serbian & #Yugoslav map thread.
Here I'll share the best material I compiled over 3 years about the #History of #Serbia & #Yugoslavia.
Let's start with a map of companies implanted in SFR.Yugoslavia.🏭
57 are detailed in the link provided.👇

2. Here comes a #Yugoslav map for foodies.
Unlike for companies, the destruction of #Yugoslavia didn't change the local specialties, which remain the delight of all locals & visitors.
#Meatlovers are like fish in water there, & back in #France I dearly miss ćevap & pljeskavica!🥺 Image
3. Here are 2 pseudo #tourism-maps of #Yugoslavia, respectively made by locals & #Americans.
I wish we helped, as requested, to conserve & protect this #beauty.🕯️
As a citizen of a #NATO country, & especially as a #French, I'm sorry we didn't, even if most of this still exists.🙏 ImageImage

1️⃣ #Erdogan implied that #Jerusalem belongs to #Turkey, referring to the #OttomanEmpire’s control over the city for much of the modern era. “In this city, we had to leave in tears during the #FirstWorldWar, it is still possible to come across traces of the #Ottoman resistance.
2️⃣ So #Jerusalem is our city, a city from us,”. “Our first #qibla [direction of prayer in #Islam] #alAqsa and the #Dome of the #Rock in Jerusalem are the symbolic #mosques of our faith. In addition, this city is home to the holy places of #Christianity and #Judaism.”
3️⃣ #Jerusalem has been the capital of #Israel since the country’s founding, and the #Jewish people have thousands of years of history in the city, backed up by extensive archaeological finds.

1/n Do you know what Janissaries are?

They were the main reason for the fall of Constantinople. They were elite forces of #Ottoman Empire comprised of young Christian boys which were captured by #Turkish Army from Christian states.

They were the same forces which conquered and turned the #HagiaSophia into a mosque.

These photos are from a visit ten years ago to the ruins of al-Zeeb, a Palestinian village on the shores on the Mediterranean, north of Acre and very close to the border with Lebanon. For #NakbaDay, here’s a bit of al-Zeeb’s history 1/10
In the #Ottoman period al-Zeeb pops up in a few archival records. Tax documents from the 16th century show a typical northern Palestinian village growing various grains, its fields ploughed by water buffalo, and a variety of other produce like fruit and honey 2/10
In 1693 the #Ottoman scholar ‘Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulsi stopped in al-Zeeb on his way to Acre. After a dangerous journey, he received a warm welcome from the village notables. He wrote a poem, punning on the fact that ‘zeeb’ sounds like the word for ‘wolf’ (dh’ib) in Arabic: 3/10

Wishing #Ramadan mubarak to all those observing the holy month/ Ramazan ayınız mübarek olsun

In 1896 the #Ottoman newspaper Servet-i Fünun featured a drawing of a mosque adorned with illuminations spelling ‘merhaba’ (hello) to greet Ramadan. But the picture came with a story...
Inside is a piece by the newspaper’s editor, Ahmed İhsan. He loved the atmosphere and meaning of Ramadan, so he decided to write a reflection on the holy month in his newspaper. I’ll let him tell his own (slightly edited for space) story:
Kalemi kağıdı elime almış, muhterem karilerime bir ramazan sohbeti yazayım demiştim.

I picked up my pen and paper, and said to myself that I’d write a Ramadan note to my esteemed readers.
