This week, people have been discussing if eating #oysters conflicts with following a plant-based diet.

Today, we’re taking a look at the definition of sentience and #veganism—and at animal species that have been proven to be more sentient than humans used to think. 👇1/14 Image
Although there is legal and scientific disagreement about #sentience, there are some standards that are broadly accepted.

According to @SentienceInst, sentience is simply the ability to have positive and negative experiences, including pain. 2/14

The concept of animal #sentience is important for ethical reasons.

If #animals are sentient beings capable of feeling pain, most humans would agree that it is morally wrong to cause unnecessary pain or suffering to them. 3/14

Restoring our coastline is a big challenge for our Lions club. But we are knee deep in fixing the problem. In addition to a number of #Beach cleanups, we are also #replanting #oysters in Oyster Bay. These lill fellas when they grow up will take toxins out of the water
And make the Bay a beautiful place to swim, fish and yes get oysters from again. Below are pictures of the oyster cages where the baby oysters are placed. We made these cages. They protect the immature oysters from predators.
We swim (or row)out to fetch the cages, clean the waste &then replant them in the #bay. When they mature, they will be planted in the oyster colony &begin to act like the ocean equivalent to a #Romba &clean the waters of the bay #LoveGodsCreatures below is a picture of a #spat

New paper out today in Limnology & Oceanography (@aslo_org) led by all-around great guy & scientist Mike Coffin!

“The killer within: Endogenous bacteria accelerate oyster mortality during sustained anoxia”

aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…
In a suite of experiments comparing #oysters treated w/ antibiotics vs. not, we demonstrate that bacteria endogenous to oysters accelerate mortality rates

The 3-year project was triggered by mass mortality of cultured oysters in 2016, seemingly linked to a period of low O₂
Generally, we found that oysters treated w/ antibiotics (chloramphenicol) lived approx. twice as long as those not treated with antibiotics

Oyster density appeared to have no effect on mortality rates under anoxia

Happy #MolluscMonday! Olympia #oysters (Ostrea lurida) are native to the West Coast of N. America. Native oysters provide shoreline protection, #habitat and food for other animals, accumulate sediment and filter water to benefit of aquatic vegetation. 1/ Live oysters covering a shoreline
2/ Once abundant in SF Bay, their numbers were greatly reduced by overharvesting and sedimentation during the Gold Rush. Current threats include non-native predators and climate change.

Do you know about RESTORATIVE OCEAN FARMING? You should. Because these 3D underwater gardens are amazing for jobs, food, climate, biodiversity, equity. Also #OYSTERS. /thread/
Bren Smith (new book: “Eat Like a Fish”) was forced to shift from fisherman to ocean farmer after collapse of cod stocks. 30K people thrown out of work over night. “Ecological crisis is a kitchen table issue.” /2/
How to “keep job that people write songs about?” Easy: ASK THE OCEAN what it makes sense to grow. Turns out, there are 1000s of edible ocean plants. Like KELP. 100s of species of shellfish. Like MUSSELS. Instead of depleting oceans they restore them. #photosynthesis /3/
