At independence 565 #princely states were officially recognized in #India. In 1947, princely states covered 40% of the area of pre-independence India and constituted 23% of its population. The rulers left behind an #architectural legacy in #palaces.

Anand Bagh Palace in Darbhanga in Bihar was constructed during the reign of Maharaja Lakshmeshwar Singh in the 1885. It was was severely damaged during the 1934 earthquake and then rebuilt. It is currently the home of the Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University. ImageImage
Umaid Bhavan in Jodhpur was built between 1929-43 as a public works famine relief project. It is today the residence of the Jodhpur family, and also a heritage hotel. ImageImageImage

In 1546, Maria, Regent of the Habsburg Netherlands, commissioned a hunting lodge in the woods of Morlanwelz. The place would be littered with frescos, murals and sculptures by Jacques Dubrœucq.
In 1554, Henri II of France invaded the land and torched the castle - an act of revenge after Habsburg troops destroyed his favourite residence Folembray -. Efforts were made to rebuild the place, but the castle was left as a sort of ruin.

Around 1190 Duke Henry I of Brabant commissioned the construction of a residence and a church nearby - St John the Baptist's Church -. It was clear he had plans to spend some time here. His successors added an addition donjon and further modifications. ImageImage
