Just last week the number was thought to be 2K, @CBSNews reports nearly 9,000 unaccompanied children have been expelled from the border during the pandemic. After fleeing severe violence, the U.S. is just sending them back to it. cbsn.ws/3huX9ee #SaveAsylum
"...to find out that our government has literally taken children who are seeking protection and sent them back to the very places they fled in such high numbers really took my breath away." - @L_Toczylowski spoke with @camiloreports for @CBSNews #SaveAsylum #ParoleThemAll
All this needless trauma when according to @L_Toczylowski the government could be conducting rapid testing before children and families to sponsors so they can quarantine and continue their immigration proceedings outside of detention. But that wouldn't fit their cruel narrative.

Gustavo is 1/2000 children expelled from the country w/o due process nor asylum protections. Gustavo's father spoke w/@Reuters, "Look how they sent him to me, they deported him as if he were grown-up, as if he were a criminal, and he is a child.” reut.rs/3bNFxJu
Without @L_Toczylowski stepping in, Gustavo's family would not have known he was expelled. After fleeing death threats and extreme physical attacks on Gustavo who is disabled, they then faced a kidnapping attempt while waiting for a chance to apply for asylum in Ciudad Juarez.
Gustavo and Elida's story highlights the continuation of family separation in the middle of a pandemic. The administration says this is to protect our "health." Family separation, trauma, and kidnappings don't cure COVID-19. #EndMPP #ParoleThemAll reut.rs/3bNFxJu

Thousands of lives are at risk right now. We cannot abandon our sisters & brothers during these troubling times.

Here are 5 things we can do to 🧊 FREEZE 🧊 the spread of #COVID19 in the immigrant community & keep families #SafeAndTogether. Image
Immigrants in detention centers across the country are being held in substandard conditions & in times of crisis this just tends to worsen.

Quarantines of these places are of no use when people cannot socially distance.

@ICEgov must #FreeThemAll. Image
Families continue to be separated thanks to ICE raids, which have NOT stopped, contrary to what the agency has said.

People are already in fear of the virus. @ICEgov must stop torturing the immigrant community and halt all raids. Image

On the Ground in Adelanto Detention Facility during #COVID19: Eyewitness account from our Directing Atty Lisa Okamoto. Our attys visited clients @ ADF today in the midst of a pandemic. @ICEgov refuses to free them despite their inability to protect them. #ParoleThemAll (THREAD)
#covid_19 creates the perfect storm for ICE to violate their civil rights & we are doing everything in our power to stop them.
Upon Arrival: ADF is screening all lawyers in the lobby. Family visits discont'd, so its eerily quiet except for the guards. Lawyers must take temp & fill out form asking if any flu-like symptoms in last 14 days, traveled internationally or had close contact with anyone who has.

Innovation Law Lab is proud to stand with allies in Georgia and across the country calling for @DOJ_EOIR @DHSgov @ICEgov @corecivic @GEOGroup and LaSalle Corrections to prioritize the health and safety of the public.
@DOJ_EOIR @DHSgov @ICEgov @CoreCivic @GEOGroup We call on @ICEgov to #ParoleThemAll. ICE is not prepared to contain the coronavirus or adequately treat those in its custody. Parole can be managed safely, and we stand willing to assist in this process as members of the legal, social service and religious communities.
@DOJ_EOIR @DHSgov @ICEgov @CoreCivic @GEOGroup We call on @CoreCivic, @GEOGroup, and LaSalle Corrections to immediately provide hygienic supplies at no cost to persons in their custody.

#MPP thread. 3:55am & I’m at the Paso del Norte Port of Entry in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, at the time asylum-seekers are supposed to show up at the bridge for their court dates. It’s still pitch black outside of course, & still no word from @DOJ_EOIR if #MPP courts going forward
4:40am. Seems like asylum-seekers have been processed as usual for their #MPP hearings. We have been trying to give advice to people before they cross about the possibility of judges calling in sick, etc. It’s been awful to watch their faces fall with the news. #ParoleThemAll
5:41am. Talked to many #MPP asylum-seekers b4 they present themselves for court & none have been returned. #MPP hearings are apparently considered “detained” by @DOJ_EOIR. Everyone request bond hearings—if “detained” it is their right! Still unclear if IJs etc call-in sick today
