1/ #ChochmatNashim for #Chukat

I'm making this it's own thread for now because, as is my wont, the list is expanding and it may be useful for other people to just have on its own. This is part of a larger parsha project I've been working on since the dawn of the WWW (1997 or so)

84.01/ Week eighty-four, February 19-25, 2022 thread begins here.

Week 83 below.
84.02/ #MotzeiShabbatMovieNight put off a night because of social obligations. Monday is a legal holiday so we will hopefully have movie night tomorrow night.
84.03/ Couldn't be happier, or prouder, as a #Steelers fan to see they hired Brian Flores to be a senior coach. The team gets top notch talent and they take an anti-racist stand. And, as seen below, it earns respect from players:

Week 79 below.
80.02/ #MotzeiShabbatMovieNight continues. This week: "Apollo 13" - a family custom when someone is recovering from having wisdom teeth taken out. And it's pretty great.
80.03/ The #NYR won 7-3, scoring 5 unanswered, and that score is larger than the current 49ers-Packers game. Sports can be weird.

Week 77 below.
78.02/ #MotzeiShabbatMovieNight, John Woo's "Paycheck"
Why? (1) Underrated sci-fi action mystery, (2) we saw Mission:Impossible 2 wks ago and it's sequel is by Jon Woo... but it's terrible while this movie is great and almost the same genre

77.02/ #HappyNewYear everyone. We're having a socially distanced party, just the nuclear family, at home. Happy to survive a year of the pandemic.

Week 69 below.
70.02/ So many self-appointed smart guys told me that Garland was doing nothing. They were wrong & caused panic because they are impatient Dunning-Kruger cynics seized by the #Literalist fallacy that if they didn't see DOJ's work, it didn't exist.

70.03/ I’m just one man, but if the supply chain problems are caused by not enough little packets of soy sauce/spicy mustard/duck sauce then I can help out immediately.

I’m also willing to propose they be functionally considered currency instead of bitcryptocoins.

1/ Some #Vayeitzei thoughts. First, Prof. Nahum Sarna translates the "sulam" (usually translated as "ladder") as "steps" likely of a Ziggurat, a human-made 'mountain' which in Mesopotamian culture simulated the mountains where gods lived (e.g. Olympus).

2/ Sulam cont: Here's an entry for the one at Ur, which a city identified with Abraham

This means, yes, that the "sulam" was a stairway to heaven. Hey, sometimes words have two meanings.
3/ Second: Possibly the most important, overlooked, character in the Chumash is Leah.

She's mother of half 6 of the 12 tribes, step-mother to 2 more, and the only daughter. Her children are the kings (Yehudah), priests (Levi) and scholars (Yisacchar).

45.02/ Re-upping this thread from Friday about journalism and why the NYT can be seen as biased vs. Arabs & Israelis.

45.03/ I just wrote up a follow-up to the above thread that goes deeper into my social-scientific (data-poor, sorry) analysis of the American perception of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

My wife: "Defenestration"
Me: "Yeet"
34.03a/ We've been having Family Movie Night (tm) for these early Sat. nights with me as MC (I've been a movie maven since a wee lad). We went through a three week Bill Murray period (Osmosis Jones, Groundhog Day, Ghostbusters) & last night may start a three wk Danny Kaye series

Rashi (Bereishis 14:10, 32:4) teaches that "מצרימה" means "למצרים" to Mitzrayim and similarly, "חרנה" is translated "לחרן" to Choron.
Instead of placing a ל at the beginning of the word, the Torah places a ה at the end. Rebbe Mendel of Vorkeh zy'a (called the Shtiller Rebbe,
the silent Rebbe, because of his caution with his speech) asks why the Torah prefers to place a "ה" at the end of the word, rather than a "ל" at the beginning of the word? If there would be fewer letters, we would understand that the Torah prefers to write more concisely.
But either way, the words, "למצרים" and "המצרימה", contain the same number of letters. So, what is gained by placing a heh at the end of the word? The Vorker Rebbe replied that the gain is that it comes later. The heh comes at the end of the word, which is preferable over a

Part two here:
31.98/ #Parsha thought: is there any two parshiyot where there's a more jarring transition in topic and tone than between #Mishpatim and #Terumah? The whole Torah changes, even. From a set of stories and comprehensible laws to: Architecture! Gold weirdness!
31.99/ Just found out that Dr. Meir Tamari z'l passed away Jan 20, 2021. Just so many leaders in Modern Orthodoxy are being lost this past year.

1/ OK a few more #Exodus thoughts (because I'm going through a mountain of parsha stuff amidst all my other writing) connected to the #DvarTorah here about the nameless collective-compassionate action of the multitude being the engine of the salvation.
2/ It struck me to link to another conundrum (kinda like the large plague frog in the room): how Pharaoh has his free will removed

So, the nameless action could be a purposeful contrast to the singular powerful individual who normally is history's focus.

3/ IMO God manipulates Pharaoh in order to prevent one person making too much of a difference!

This ties into another larger point I often make about the culpability of the Egyptians & how actually they, not Pharaoh, are the focus of the plagues.

24.02/ Just heard a radio ad where the phrase "Santa is coming with our holiday goods" and, look, can we work harder at keeping the fiction that Holidays is Happy Holidays isn't a one-to-one word for "Xmas"? OK my dudes?

16.01/ There are some really promising signs. It's a good feeling that increasing the number of voters - without even knowing how they voted - is good for the Democrats. It's good for democracy and the "Democrat" party. Funny that
16.02/ A reminder that huge crowds - and 40% of the vote - is also what Hoover inspired in 1932.
16.03/ Florida is a true toss-up because it's Florida and it's designed to be a god-awful mess. But I have a good feeling about Texas (and Georgia). A gooooooooooooood feeling about Texas
