Here's a proposal to solve the serious social and political problems in the #USA: #Partition.

Let's just use the 2020 Presidential Election Results as a basis.

Split the US to create two new countries, one for Blue America and one for Red America.

(1/) Image
The red states can be called URSA, or United Republican States of America, and the blue states can be called United States of Democratic America (USDA).

In blue states (USDA), #abortion would be a fundamental right; in red states (URSA), it would be illegal.

(2/)
#Evolution would be taught in USDA, #Creationism in URSA.

#Opencarry guns would be a fundamental right in URSA; the #SecondAmendment would be abolished in USDA; no private guns.

In URSA, there would be a flat tax rate of 10%.

In USDA, the #top1percent would pay 99% tax.

THREAD on 'Hyderabad Liberation Day'& the Telangana (peasant)Armed rebellion
The centre is observing a year-long event to mark the annexation of the erstwhile #Hyderabad state to India on Sept 17 1948
The reality of it is more complex (1/n)
#HyderabadLiberationDay
The state of #Hyderabad was formally annexed on September 17, 1948, through a military offensive called Operation Polo, after negotiations between India and the Hyderabad state failed. The state's last Nizam was Osman Ali Khan, who decided to stay independent after #partition
At that time, communist-backed peasants were waging a full-scale armed rebellion against landlords in Telangana. It continued till 1951, until the CPI called it off. Osman Ali Khan, the world’s richest man then, was also monarch of the largest princely state under British India.

@tanjil_rashid_ @ZareerMasani @saliltripathi 1. #Partition1947 counterfactuals aren't counterintuitive. #Partition ended a zero sum game among the same stale set of interlocutors conducting a dialogue of the deaf #Simla, June '45 onwards. #CabinetMissionPlan's devolution did NOT solve #India's impasse.
@tanjil_rashid_ @ZareerMasani @saliltripathi 2. #Jinnah accepted the #CabinetMissionPlan for an embryonic #Pakistan was assured, and permitted to secede, come 1957, if the #confederation was not to the #MuslimLeague's liking. Routinely overlooked by #Nehru's #Indian and #Pakistani baiters.
@tanjil_rashid_ @ZareerMasani @saliltripathi 3. To iterate: #CabinetMissionPlan was a pilot project to be reviewed decadally. Just how was #India and #Nehru to embark on #economic #planning and consolidate a #democratic #union of disparate elements riven by #regionalism, #casteism and #sectarianism?

This day 58 years ago on 27 May 1964 India was cast into a dark pall of gloom and shock when All India Radio (as #Doordarshan then was) announced the death of the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. "The light is out" said The Times of India
In the 16 years or so as Prime Minister of a country that was born amidst the cauldron of a bloody #Partition, he succeeded in weaving a diverse nation of many languages, religions, groupings, political views and opinions into a functioning modern State
He was the ultimate modernist, technophile, scientifically-minded, internationalist leader any post-colonial country could have hoped for. Did he have flaws? Hell, yes! He was a human after all not a God, and thank goodness for that.

The key points to note in this brilliant article by @dharmadispatch in @Openthemag are given in the pictures below. The biggest mystery for me is when you look at 1947 even though a #Nehru could have been sympathetic to the #Muslim cause given the #partition where was the need
to glorify the invaders, the most brutal barbaric rulers of the Mughal period & make them the heroes & representatives of Indian muslims? For someone who claimed to be secular & fighting for united India the #Nehru ecosystem could have found so many other heroes to represent the
Indian muslims. Accepting the extra sympathy for a community in the aftermath of partition #Nehru & his eco system by promoting barbaric figures as their heroes actually did the greatest disservice to the Indian muslims. Fissiparous elements drove the wedge deeper over time.

Today, I did something extremely meaningful and important for my family, something 75 years in the making, a respectful gesture of love, remembrance, and hope. I went to the Mughal-era Dara Shikoh library, located on the grounds of Ambedkar University, Kashmeri Gate, Delhi. 1/n
I went there to meet Ms. Mallika Ahluwalia, CEO of the @PartitionMuseum in Amritsar. She and her dedicated team have done a wonderful and much-needed job of honoring the memory of the tens of millions displaced or killed during #Partition, which includes my Indian family. 2/n
Ms. Ahluwalia and team now intend to establish a Partition Museum in Delhi, and are working with local authorities to refurbish the Dara Shikoh library to make it another shrine and memorial to the horrors of #Partition. A museum needs evocative links to the past, naturally. 3/n

THE LAST PRINCESS OF LAHORE - BAMBA DULEEP SINGH (1869 - 1957)

Thread

Post partition, every morning a weak old woman would board the Model Town bus service headed to the city. The conductor never asked her for money or he would invite anger of the last Queen of Punjab.

1/n
Princess Bamba Sutherland, the eldest daughter of Maharaja Duleep Singh and grand-daughter of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, was born on Sep 29, 1869, in London.

Duleep Singh, the last Maharaja of Punjab was taken away to England by British after annexing Punjab.

2/n
Since he was still a child he was forcibly converted to Christianity and made to adopt British values in order to prevent him from ever thinking about regaining Punjab.

He was also kept away from his mother Maharani Jindan.
When he finally met his mother years later...

Engineering a City #thread
Having spent my entire childhood in #Kochi (#Cochin ), it feels criminal to not know the story of how the city came to be the #metropolis it is today. Putting together a thread to trace the journey of the city which has been so endearingly mine (1)
Part 1: The #Malabar Mud-Banks
The story of Cochin is not just about how an engineering marvel can change social fabric, but also of many tenets of #British #Colonialism in India which is often taken for granted, passed off lazily as exploitation, missing nuance (2)
As with any coastal town, the cultural and economic history of Kochi is intertwined with maritime trade routes since the time of the Early Romans and Arabs. Thanks to the #biennale , most of us would now be familiar with the term #Muzuris (3)

1-The #Muslim electorate massively voted for #Partition in 1945,

….drove most Hindus from West Pakistan in 1945

and the same more gradually in East Pakistan or Bangladesh,
2-….but kept #India as a joint account where Muslims were not only welcome but even enjoyed certain privileges

In the last and only de facto referendum, the last election before independence, 87% of the Muslim electorate voted against #India
3-and in favour of the Muslim League and its programme - the #Partition of India.

While the Hindus voted for a multicultural India,

…the Muslims voted against India and against multiculturalism.

That is a historical fact, and no amount of skullduggery can alter it.

BJP's failure in winning 'intellectual' debate became most apparent in #CAA. Reason lies with party. I worked in this space 4 too long to kno how long term agendas are set. Why intellectualism is equated to #Left leaning among a section in #WestBangal & #India. 1/n
I have been consistent in saying that #CAA is a major correction to the historic neglect to human tragedies from sustained flight of #Hindu & other minority from #EastPakistan/#Bangladesh. It's unfinished job of #Partition. 2/n
#Secularism will be threatened only when #India wil institutionally discriminate between two sets of citizens, as it happened in #Pakistan & #Bangladesh not by virtue of giving citizenship 2 d discriminated/persecuted in this 2 countries born out of discriminatory principles. 3/n
